Ok heres the situation, me and a buddy changed the oil in my s13 last night, (i have a broken hand so i cant do it by myself) before we changed it he made me go get a nipon oil filter which cost 4.95 + tax. I said to him dude does it really mater? why cant i just use a different brand? He went off saying that nipon only!! and wouldnt stop.

My question is, does it mater which oil filter you use? Yes? Then what one do you prefer.

Note, engine is KADE

Can't go wrong with OEM.

I used to use FRAM, but everyone keep telling me it sucks, so I switched back to OEM.

remember there is a reason why the manufacturers chose that filter. Purolator used to be good but the size of them decreased.

i noticed fram oil filters changed in size over the past few years. oem is always the way to go.

OEM=Original Equipment Manufacturer. In this case that would be Nissan. So you can buy it at the Nissan dealer.

Fram X2 & Fram Extended Guard are the best of the fram lineups. Compareable to Mobil1 and Purolator in construction and design. Motorcraft FL-400S (oversized), Purolator 20195 (oversized)
All good filters

Motorcraft is the cheapest one. wal mart stocks them

For my KA I used the OEM because I didn't care.

On my SR I use K&N because I work here, I know our shit rocks, (better than Mobil 1 some cases), and the nut on top makes changing that SR oil filter 100x easier.

But FRAM? NEVER. It's made out of recycled junk mail.

I use K&N on my VQ, but I used to use Bosch on my KA since I worked right next to a Kragen. I would avoid Fram like the plague.

Link to said testing? Your going to have to show some proof of this. Why would Nissan make crappy filters so that the cars they sell can then come back with problems, witch they would have to cover under warranty. Yeah. Makes no sense. They'd lose a lot of money that way. You can tell its not cheap. For instance, the KA Oil filter is a heavy mofo and if I remember the picture that someone took of the filter inside it was pretty thick aswell...

you guys trip over frams like mad.
Like I said, Fram X2 & extended guard are really good filters.
metal endcaps, silicone anti drain back valve, coil-spring loaded bypass, and thick synthetic media. The only thing is that they are overpriced.

And to the guys who think OEM is good -

its all about the wix/nascar filters that napa sells. like 7 bucks and has the cyclone rotating something or other. works good for me

No one carries purolator in my area (small town) so I use a Wix usually or a K&N premium Performance Gold filter.

The K&N is kinda nice due to the one inch nut on the top of it so removal is even easier than usual.

Anto good shit.

WIX'es are good as well

As for the blue OEM nissan ones, check the labeling on the box. If it still says "Made In Japan", you're probably in the green. Once it says "Made In China", you better watch out though.
I'm not sure if they're doing this with all the filters, it MIGHT just be the filters that the newer cars use. In any case, be on the lookout.
Nissan is probably cutting corners & saving money on the small stuff.. they don't care about it, as the filters will probably be good for no more than 4-5k miles of regular driving.

I know for a fact that with a GOOD oil & matching filter, you can pull off 8k-10k oil change intervals easily.

Yeah, I'll probably get an extra one next oil change and pop one open. I'm also pretty sure they say made in Japan. And it feels different from the other Nissan filters I buy for my household (01 Sentra SE and 99 Altima SE).

Both made in Japan
i've used both on my RB, the smaller one actually has RB25DET listed as an application, larger blue one does not.
I asked Mikey for the RB25 oil filters, he gave me the smaller ones. Justin told me to just use the larger KA ones for more oil capacity. Both fit, both worked.

Anto
11-29-2007, 02:04 PM
Yeah, you can use oversized filters on the KA for better filtration.

To recap for those of you looking for a regular 3-5k Oil filter that's cheap, there is NOTHING wrong with the filters that have cardboard endcaps. Although cardboard, they still hold up to the task of regular oil change intervals, given that they are not pushed past ~5k. If you're at a trackday or driftday, i'd recommend a better filter.

A quick recap of the good filters:

Purolator 20195 (Oversized app)
Mobil1
K&N
Wix, NAPA
Motorcraft FL-400s (Oversized app)
Fram X2 & extended guard
Wal Mart Supertech

Motorcraft filters are the easiest to access, they are sold at wal mart for $4 something and have the same internals as a Purolator. Use FL-400s for the KA, it's a slightly bigger filter (only a few ozs) that has more pleats for more filtration. It's what I use on my DD.
