View Full Version : Battery relocation

I got started on my battery relocation today but didn't get very far.

I need to know a few things:

1) where to mount the box in the trunk. In the spare tire area (meaning I'd be w/out a spare tire for daily driving) or on the raised part just to the right. The box if small enough to fit on the raised part but I'm not sure if a) I want my weight 6" higher and b) if I'm going to be drilling into anything there. I gave it a quick look, but I couldn't tell if I'd be hitting anything there or not.

2) Where to run the neg cable? just to the floor of the trunk (doesn't sound like a good idea to me) or do I have to ground somewhere specific?

3) Where on the firewall to put the pos cable through? I couldn't find a good predrilled hole to fit that massive cable through so I guess I'm gona have to drill Will any spot free of stuff on the other side do?

Thanks in advance for the help,
Dave-

From what I hear, there are only one or two holes that are big enough (in the firewall) to fit battery cables through, but if you elect not to use these (they will require a very good grommet to prevent the f-wall from chafing away the cable insulation), you can also-- I hear-- run the wires below your car, i.e. going under the firewall and under the floorpan, and then up through a hole somewhere towards the rear (errr... duh - I just don't know where.) Yes, this means your wires will be faced w/ the elements, but apparently it's not (particularly) unsafe practice. This would also mean you don't have unsightly wires running through your cabin. But hey-- you have a stripped interior right, so what's a few more wires gonna do for looks?

BTW I would bolt my battery down to the raised section that creates a sort of 'empty' space in the far right hand corner of the trunk -- should help w/ weight distribution, and would allow you to keep a spare tire.

Don't forget to buy a box to put it in -- especially if you plan on using the car @ that tracks.

Thx for the help adey. I've got summit racing's battery relocation kit, a little welding and its competetion legal. I also decided to run the cable through the inside of the car, it's already run from the trunk to the ecu, just need to get it to the engine bay. Any idea on the ground?

Edit: ok, just checked, there is something in my way so I can't mount the box to the far right of the trunk, I'm gona have to mount it down in the spare tire area. I'll just mount it to the far rear of that space...no biggie. Jeff helped me out so I know where to ground now. I think I know where to go through my firewall.

I'm all set for running cables. I just have to figure out how to attach to the pos cable to the car so she'll start up. Also don't quite know how to mount the battery in the box. The directions I have really suck. So if you've done it, help a brotha out if not, i'll figure it out and I'm taking pics and stuff. I'll do a full start to finish install/write-up thing once I'm done.

Mount the battery on the left side of the trunk, or else you'll be drilling into the gas tank. I ran my cable under the car. It seemed a lot easier to do this, imo.

The left side? The gas tank is farther up towards the front of the car than I will be drilling, unless your talking about the EVAP which I already said I was going to avoid by not mounting in the far rear right. There isn't anything under where the spare tire goes, so that's where I'm gona put it, unless you know something I don't.

What did you use to connect your posative cable to everything that needs power from your battery?

Noooooo
you MUST do it on the behind the passenger rear wheel. It really helps when u take right corners. I put mine there. Was kinda tight, but it fit. Take the evap off, drill the holes, set up the battery and get the evap back on. It won't get in a way. The reason why you gotta put it back there, is cuz it's going to counterweight you sitting in the front driver's seat. If you put it on the left side, you weight is gonna be uneven. Taking that canistor off is quite simple. I think 2-3 bolts. no biggie. The best place to drill, is right above where the harness goes to the ecu. Then just force the cable through so it comes out down on the passenger side. Running under the car is really unnecessary cuz there is taillight cable that runs in a special pathway from the rear to the ecu. The positive cable fits there.

The ground - just ground to any metal shit that you can find. I grounded directly to the trunk. Doesn't matter.

I got the same battery kit. The way i mounted is wrong, but it holds tight. anyway. There is a metal thing that goes across the battery. It has to slots on the sides. There u put the blue little thingies with the holes paralel to the ground. In them u put the j bolts and hold them down below.

to connect the cable though, there is a thing included with the kit. It has a hole on one side and a slot for the cable on the other. you take the car's positive wire, get the bolt out, put that in between and tighten the bolt. than put the kit wire in the slot and tighten it. After that i took the white thingy that was underneath the battery cut it, and made a plastic cover from the bottom. taped it around and left it hangin.

hope this helps. if u got any more qs ask me.

AS far as where to mount it, I chose to mount mine on the driver's side of the trunk because there isn't anything there that was in the way, and it looks clean. If you can mount it on the passenger side, maybe you should. The extra weight on that side of the car MIGHT help offset the driver's weight, and you won't have to cross the battery cable over the rear-end, since the stock positive cable is on the passenger side, too. I dunno. As long as it works, I guess. Just make sure to use good wire for the battery, like 2 gauge.

Ha, well it just BARELY fits on the right side. about 1/2" more and it would not fit. I've just about got it in. My biggest problem so far on the install has been locating tools...prolly spent more time looking for stuff than installing stuff. Welp, back to it I guess...still takin pics.

BTW, You do not have to remove the evap

being the lazy bassid i am i didnt read what others said and where you ran the wire thru dsc. so what i would do which you already ran it thru is take off your front drivers wheel off and wheel well liner and you should see a grommet slice that open and run the wire thru there it will fall right at your dead pedal then run it thru your car.

did the schemtics help you any dsc?

*edit* ohh and i hope you didnt drill anything and ran it inside your car after deciding to read what people said. my way is simple and the best and would look the cleanest and prevent and problems of the cable being cut or anything of that nature

Was the summit aluminum box pretty big? i thought it was pretty extraneous for just a battery since it takes up a good 20% of my 2001 Sentra's trunk space. (stock battery only took up 60% of summit box.

(maybe we got different kits tho. let me know)

CAMP, why would I run it through the drivers side of the firewall? I'd have to go down the passanger side, over to the drivers side, through the firewall, back to the passangers side and then hook everything up. Sounds like a lot of work to avoid drilling a hole. The kit came with rubber grommets BTW, incase you had to drill holes.

exitsanity, we've got different boxes, mine is plastic. It is a bit longer than it needs to be for my battery but the width is perfect.

Progress...

It's sortof race legal. The J bolts have to be welded on but that's it, then it is competetion legal.

I still havn't finished this project. Just ran out of time. I probably will finish it over the weekend.
