when you look for a motor look for basic # 1 is a dry cold compression test.
should be above 150 psi for a good S13 SR20DET motor an excellent one is about 160psi and up. also the leak down test is an important one as well.

to test the motor on the ground and out of a clip is
1) starting fliud and a jumper cables on to the starter. might help you avoid getting a bad motor

but nothing beats bench testing a motor, kinda what I DO WITH ALL OF THE MOTORS I have sold in the past.
