View Full Version : Iridium plug gap?

On a s14 ka is the plug gap .044? Also should you gap iridium plugs considering how small the electrode is? They came gap to .044 anyway.

I tried searching but all I saw was topics on sr plug gaps which I think was .030

yeah, SR plug gaps are .030, I think the stock NGK off the shelf SR plugs are .044 though.

Yeah but I have Ka still in s14. I was assuming the plug gap for my car is .044, and according to ngk's site they're gapped at that, so I just threw em in. But I for some reason seems like my gas hand is going down a lil quicker than norm, so wanted to make sure I had right gap. Could be just my thinking though

you know you mileage per tank before compared to now, that would tell you quickly.

The old plugs were probably gapped wider than .044 (1.1) because they were worn throwing a large spark on the na motor. Try opening it up to .050 on the ka for the new plugs.

The SR standards run kind of like.

.032 heatrange 6 or 7 stock boost.

boost up? Lots of racing?

.030

over 1 bar. Must be heatrange 7 or 8

.028 maybe lower based on feedback.

I have a set of those waiting on my next spark plug change, I gotta get a gap tool before then to make sure they are good to go with the gapping.

Yeah they are. Thing was, I was just afraid .044 was gonna be to large of agap. Like I said the gas mileage thing might just be me over analyzing. When I put the iridium plugs in, there was no lag, they pulled harder and smoother, so no complaints there. I also know it's not just because they're new plugs, because I had put the old ones in last july, and those were the v-power or whatever you call them. Even those brand new didn't pull as hard as the iridiums.

Well the big secret is.

They are the same as the "iri" series in Japan, which is a racing plug, just repackaged. And you can order them in ranges 7 8 and 9 in iriway (sr). Japanese retail conversion is like $15 per plug. So the IX right now is a steal.

What heat range (or part number) are your plugs, it might be that you are running a range 7 on an NA engine (poor mileage, good performance). Increasing the gap would help. What heat range was the NGK-R's (v power, silver box?)

Unsure what number equals heta range, but there are two numbers on the box bkr5eix-11 and then 5464.

I wish I still had the v-power box to tell you

Just looked at the one of the old v power plugs and the number on the acutal plug is bkr5e 11..so I guess there the same cept one is iridium and other copper?

yeah they are both 5. Which is good for na. Playing with the gap really isnt going to hurt anything, I would try widening it up.

Pretty Much, there is alot of craftsmanship differences between the two and little nerdy things that set them apart also.

Hmm okay maybe I'll try widening to .050 like you said. Think I will notice a lil more power? What about the electrode, any chance of damaging the fine iridium electrode?

Probably be a while before I tried widening, cause socket wrech is messed up. Probably wait for another cool day and when I get another wrench.

hey john..got a question

heard a rumor that you're not even supposed to mess with the gap on the iridium plugs. I've heard that the metal is too fragile and can break off...

any info on this, or is it just bs?

Well, the grounding strap is still the grounding strap, your just not supposed to beat on the electrode of any plug.

Really, you need all need to get the baller NGK plug gapping tool. Couldn't find the NGK one online, but this one is identical.

You use the metal tab piece to only bend on the grounding strap, never leveraging against the electrode.
