Welp, I finally took care of the rust spot on my car. used a razor and cut back the paint around the rust spot to make sure there wasn't rust under the paint...there wasn't any. I applied navaljelly or something like that, left it on for 5minuets and cleaned off. After doing that the rust was totally gone...that stuff ate it clean off leaving bare shiny metal. So I cover the surrounding area and spray my primer on...all is well. Now, a week later, The rust has come through the primer

What went wrong? What should I do now? Do I need more coats of primer after I get rid of the rust this time?

I hate rust!

I would take the naval jelly to it, then hit it with a grinder, to get all possible crevices. THEN, hit it with brake cleaner since it won't leave a residue. Take a cotton cloth and wipe it clean after the brake cleaner, and then quickly primer it.

By the way, did you ever get that 10 bucks I sent you for the shifter?

Well, this is a very small section of the side of my car with good paint all around it, so any sort of grinding doesn't sound good to me. However, I'll try everything else, skipping the grinding. Thx for the tips.

heh, yeah I got the $10 like 4 months ago i thought I sent you a PM...maybe not. I'm bad with those...worse with e-mail.

I agree with the naval jelly and the grinding from above. To me, rust is like "auto body cancer". If you don't take steps to completely remove the rust, it WILL come back.

Primer is not ment to act as a final top coat. It has NO water proofing properties and will let water, fog, mist and others attack the metal again. Sand or sand blast to bare metal, treat with a rust preventor and prime and paint...

DSC,

When I was 16 I bought my first car...a FIAT! I know ALL about rust!

If you want the rust to disaapear forever, you need to cut out the offending metal and weld a new patch. Rust is like cancer, it never goes away unless it is completely removed. Most rust holes start from the inside out, it's much worse than you think when it finally pokes thru the paint. The inner sheet metel is already damaged.

Naval jelly and other chemical treatments will make it go away temporarily, but I guarantee it will be back, especially if it is humid out.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

naw, the car got scratched...deep. And it was a small enough scratch that I didn't notice till it started rusting. when I cut away the paint surounding it, it was rust free.
So I think its just surface rust. Keep in mind, its a good cond' 96...just got keyed or something *shrugs*
