WTF! happened? ok, so i was driving s13 normaly doing about 25 to 30 mph around a big center island. while merging into my left lane i hit a small pot hole and the steering wheel got stuck, i almost crashed into the curb (island), but before i hit, i yanked the wheel right and it unstuck. when i got home i jacked the car up and everythind appered to be normal. the steering rack didnt look broken or anything..What do you think happened?

Has it binded up since then? Are there any rub marks on the suspension pieces or on the steering column? It's possible the column got hung up on your downpipe or something (what motor?) Are you leaking any PS/ATF fluid? If you jack the front tires off the ground can you go lock to lock smoothly?

do you have an after market headers or exhaust manifold?

if so your steering colum in your engine bay probably got caught on the header/ manifold.

check the distances between them.

sounds sorda farfetched but maybe when you hit the hole one of the lines got crimped for a second or so causing no fluid to be circulated and you jerking the wheel may have uncrimped them....other than that i have no guess.

you think the steering rack needs to be rebuilt? could that have been the problem?

sounds like the mechanism that locks the steering wheel when your key is out is prob causing the problem, is your key worn out? just take the lock cylinder off and check to see if the plunger goes up and down with they key in and turning back and forth... most likely not a suspension prob

...mmm very dangerous take care of it like...... now!

the key is not really too bad but ill check that for sure. but if that isnt the case, do you think there is any other possibilities?

same thing happened to me, however my ignition is broken, so when i turned whatever was holding the guage open so i could turn the steering wheel (you know when you put the key in and put it in the on position) fell out and it locked up as if you turned the steering wheel w/o the key. so i suggest you take it to Auto Specialist and get that looked into.
