View Full Version : Oil Cooler and PS Cooler Install

I've posted this on ka-t.org, but decided to throw it on here for those who don't visit that site.



Here's my latest finished projects. Due to my coolant temps with no oil cooler at my last lapping day, a change was needed if I wanted to beat on the car all day and have peace of mind.

First the coolers
For oil I decided to use a stock FC RX-7 oil cooler because of the size and wide use by many other road racers and it was available from a local junkyard. From some measuring it comes out to be 202ci, which is pretty big in comparison to other stock coolers and most aftermarket ones.
All fitting are Russell and lines are -10 stainless

Time to cut and fit the oil cooler. I decided the best place to mount it would be directly behind the bumper support above my intercooler. I wanted to keep the bumper support because the car is still daily driven and wanted to cut it in a way to serve as ducting.

I decided to use a Hayden four row transmission cooler for my power steering
Here it is in placed infront of the radiator

Since I have a JGS kit and no PS relocation bracket I had the resivour ziptied to my intercooler pipe and 2in from the compressor housing = not good. So I went ahead and moved it to the corner of the engine bay by the clutch master cylinder.

The results have been awesome. Before the coolers, during a 15 minute lapping session I could only go about 3 laps full out before starting to overheat and would have to back off, and half of the engine bay would be soaked in ATF from the PS resivour.

Now after, I could do a 20 minute session without worrying about temps until after 10+ laps. And then all it takes is one cool down lap and I'm back at it. Also not one hint of ATF out of the resivour. I'm very pleased with the results.

yea the fc oil cooler is as big as most intercoolers. i was gona do the same but decided no to because its over kill on a na motor i plan on gettin a four row oilcooler instead...

small one is 3/8 large is 5/8
depending which hose you choose.
I did same thing and took off the stock loop cooler and ran AN lines from the rack to the cooler and regular hose back. AN hose isn't needed, but I needed to order the 16x1.5 o-ring fitting that fits the rack anyway.

Either way, looking good. I see you don't run oil thermostat, so how long does it take you to warm up???

The FC oil cooler has a thermostat already in it. So there is some money you can save.

Oh and the price breakdown:

oil cooler -$20
Lines and fittings - $220 (had about 6ft extra, so could have been under $200)
Relocation - $20
PS cooler - $20

total = $280

not bad at all, just takes some time

funds are a little short now, so no oil pressure or temp gauge as of yet.

i wana switch out my cooler to something with an internal thermostat just like those fc coolers...but i dont want something that long...

do anyone out there know what other oem manufactured oil cooler cores that has an internal thermostat but a little bit smaller core....

something small enough to put in the bumper, passenger side air dam of the stock s14/jdm navan bumper??

Kim, the FD has a smaller more square oil cooler (actually the R1 models have twin oil coolers, one on each side of the bumper) and I believe it has the same internal thermostat as the FC one. Go to rx7club.com and click the 3rd gen forum and go to parts for sale.

The p.s. cooler is on the low pressure side right?
I could imagine those little hose clamps blowing off on the high pressure side.

Another quick question about the ps cooler. Ok so I understand you replace the loop on the low pressure side, but you said you don't need AN lines? So you can replace the loop from which point to which point? Can I just use oil lines instead? Thanks

Secondly, does anyone know what size AN lines Greddy Uses on their oil coolers? I need to replace my cooler cause it is leaking. THanks!

I did not replace the stock loop, but put the cooler in line between the loop and the resivour. If you take the loop out than what's the point of the cooler.

You're putting in one cooler and taking out one.

i would think you take out that long unnecessary loop and add a more efficient cooler core like you did to make things cleaner.

somebody was saying you run risky low oil pressure with a relocation kit and/or cooler.... anybody have any input on this? i'm planning to put in both an oil cooler and ps cooler when i drop in the new ka.

The stock loop is not unnecessary, it acts as a PS cooler.

but actually if you look at the way lance cut the support, it didnt really weaken it much at all. It would be the same as swiss cheesing the support. As long as the edge metal isnt cut away (so that the bumper support retains its same outter deminsions) it doesnt get that muc weaker, just a lot lighter.

Nope. The stock tube "cooler" is POS thats got gunk and shit all over it vs a tube and fin cooler with lots of airflow.
You're waaaaaaaaaay better off.


The stock loop is not unnecessary, it acts as a PS cooler.
on a stock system - yes, you need it. But its just a hard line, if you add a proper cooler to the system, it doesn't effect anything.

I use the JDM front bumper support and since it is thinner than the USDM, I don't think I am going to cut that any thinner. But yah, where does the PS cooler connect to? and hey Dousan PG, do you know the size of the greddy oil cooler lines? Thanks!

PS cooler goes between the rack and reservoir on the low pressure side. Follow the 3/8 line from reservoir down to stock loop cooler. that goes into the rack.
