the car I just got... s13... 200k miles on it. the motor has 140ish, with a newly swapped timing chain and rod bearings.

whats too much for an s13? when should I start looking for another shell? OR!!! what should I look to replace?

I wouldn't say 200 is too much. I have a friend with 260 on his and it still runs good. look underneath it for anything rubber. bushings, seals hoses gaskets all of that stuff which wear out faster.
I would recommend a energy bushing kit to take slop out of the suspension. and probably new steering rack boots as well as rebuilding the brakes.
Safety first!

nice! thanks!

and... I dont know. I DO know that he knows what he is doing, and that the motor runs strong. mechanical engineering students... they're weird.

I did bushings and balljoints on mine, and it made a significant difference to the feel of the car.

do a compression test...
how does it drive?...

200K doesn't mean much, it still might be in good shape...

I took my 220K S13 out to the track with nothing more than all the motor maintenance up to date and suspension bushings... it ran great but the clutch fan failed on me...

your friend's s2k's are hot dude. were you able to salvage the motor after that... or was it through?

it looks like Im going to have to look up how to do these bushings and ball joints. hope its not as rough as doing some of the other things.

Its a pain in the ass, but if you have an oxy acetalyn torch, a press and a hack saw the bushings are doable.
The ball joints you need a BFH, some heat and some strength, probably not the best way to do it, but it worked for me.

200k on the chassis and 140k ish on the engine, just do the usual body/suspension stuff. Like said, bushings, adjustable arms, coilovers/better suspension setup than stock, subframe spacers will make the car feel like night and day. The engine should still be good, if it pulls fine, then i wouldnt worry about it. Just keep up on the regular maintenance, oil changes, fuel filter, plugs, etc...

finding a car lower then 150k-100k is kinda rare.. just buy it, then mod it somewhat then sell it and make net profit... thats what ray did!

as long as theres no rust you shoud be fine. just make sure to maintain it. replace bushings, fluids, bad parts, lol. you know the usual. mileage usually isnt the problem, its how its been treated.

im almost at 300k on my s13 chassis. the original motor blew at 285k and i rebuilt it. i replaced most of the bushings with oem for now, no rust, and everything is mechanically fine except here and there the door ajar light on the cluster will flicker on and off i've heard it might be a bad ground. to answer your question as long the chassis isn't in too bad of shape and everything still looks good, then it really wouldn't matter to me how many miles are on motor/chassis.

I replaced all the bushings on mine with the Energy master set, got the Nismo motor/tranny mounts, steel DSS DS, and replaced the steering boots. Even tho it's a stock KA, it's really fun to drive.

My s14 has 265k miles on it. I push it hard. Miles on the engine. unknown, but it still goes and takes it.

I do need a new tranny, syncros, throwout bearing. I plan to get another ka24de and build it up outside the car and drop it in. :)

I think KAs hold up better than a SR in the ways of mileage, but it all depends on the owners and how the car was maintained. I take as much care of mine as possible.

I would also replace the steering rack bushings with energy suspension rack bushings.
They are pretty easy to replace.
Just disconnect the rack bolts and push the rack up and slip the bushings around the rack.

Yeah, steering rack bushings are a must. When I bought my S13 it had 132k. One of the first few things I did with it was taking it to a body shop. I had them throw the car on a chassis bender thingy. They made sure everything was to spec.. If it wasn't, they tweaked it according to OEM Specs. The car was never in an accident, but 13 years of driving had tweaked the chassis a bit. Car handled amazing afterwards. Paid something like $300 for that little service.. Well worth the chassis refresh!!! Bringing my S14 in soon too.
