hey, so i lurk around this board a lot, i try to find more places to post, but it seems like most of the threads around here are about matters WAY too baller for me (like rims) lol. If any of you guys are on 240sxforums you might know a little bit about my buildup, but i thought i might share my buildup with the zilvians because as far as i know, im being a pioneer with this, so here goes.

i'll start by introducing my car. i bought my 1990 fastback in february after crashing my old 89 auto fastback on some black ice (tree>me). she was completely mint, 95k miles, 1 elderly owner, ALL original, down to the scotch tape over the fuses. it came with a gigantic folder of every maintenance record since it was purchased brand new in 1989. i overpaid a lil ($2800) but i think it was MORE than worth it for a platform this clean. heres a pic.

current mods to this car include 20% tint, a JVC head unit, welded differential, and megan racing springs mated with KYB AGX shocks. i also just removed the spoiler and began prepping the hatch for bodywork to fill the holes from said spoiler.

anyways, on to the fun stuff. before i bought this car i bought a motor that i planned on swapping into my first fastback. now...i didnt exactly buy an orthodox swap like an sr20 or anything like that. i actually found my swap in a local junkyard. i walked by a pulsar...nothing special, but i had never seen one before and it intrigued me, so i popped the hood, a FWD CA18DE, cool, but there was some writing on the valve cover: CA18DE 1988 miles-25,197 so i thought, DANG, this is a swapped car (car was an 89) and it was a runner. heres a pic to keep you interested.

so i bought this and started delving into a pretty extensive buildup. as you could see...the motor was FWD, but i didnt care, converting isnt a big deal. so i started off by buying a turbo, a brand new skyline T28, dual ball bearing, and thermocoated so it wont rust (killer deal also) and manifold, an XSpower top mount SS manifold. i bolted it up for the ballin factor after cleaning up the motor a bit. heres a few more pics to keep you from thinking i'm a rambling idiot.

ok so after that, it was time to get down to business, i didnt want this to be a run of the mill CA swap, though it already was pretty out there. i soon found a KILLER deal on some Tomei forged pistons (guy didnt know what brand they were) so i scooped them up. i began taking the motor apart, finding that it had a crank girdle, which USDM CA's dont have, i determined it was jdm, cool, jdm makes me popular. so heres some pics of the teardown and pistons.
all external junk taken off

baller status:cool:

i then sent the bottom end to the shop for boring, hot tanking, balancing, decking, polishing, etc. my builder also picked up all my bearings and rings for me, while i bought a complete gasket set, new oil pump, ARP headstuds, a RWD CA18det oil pan, CA18ET mounts and brakets, CA18det fuel rail with DSM blue tops, CA18det cams, 38mm wastegate, and a turboXS RFL blow off valve. and some other stuff im probably forgetting. but i know how you guys like pictures, so here goes.
http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d123/LongGrain/240%20buildup/motormounts.jpg

http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d123/LongGrain/240%20buildup/teardown7.jpg

so then i got my block back, and attacked all of my parts with an arsenal of duplicolor. valve covers were coated in gloss black. oil pan in flat black, block is cast (gunmetalish) head is aluminum. after this my motor sat...completely disassembled for a month or two, then my builder contacted me and told me to bring everything back, and that he was going to do some final cleaning, and he was going to help me assemble the whole thing at his shop free of charge, just to ensure everything is done properly. i was pretty pumped about this, so i brought everything back to his place and im awaiting this saturday when i go over there to assemble.

so for now, thats how far my buildup is. heres a quick rundown of what i still need to finish the swap. im looking for 350rwhp at whatever psi my turbo will let me push it to.

i still need fuel management, in which im running megasquirt II (i'll be buying this shortly with the money i received for graduation)
i also need a clutch/flywheel, which i'll be using an XTD stage 3 SR20 clutch, with whatever SR20 flywheel i end up buying.
Godspeed FMIC kit
CA rwd tranny bell housing
fans, fuel pump, oil lines, and maybe some other minor things. but im getting there. and im hoping for a pretty fuckin badass CA swap when all is said and done.

anyways. i hope you enjoyed my buildup thread, if anyone is interested i will be updating it as it progresses. my goal is to have it done before i leave for college in early september :D

its a girdle that connects all the mains together to strengthen up the bottom end. jdm CA's had it because they were cool and turbo, usdm ones didnt because nissan didnt feel they were necessary in a non turbo platform.

you can see the girdle in the 7th picture down when it is still bolted to the mains (close up) its the big black thing. and you can also see it all by itself in the very last picture with the head and oil pan.

i really feel like a noob right now but I don't know anything about the ca18. why does it look like there are 8 intake ports on the side of the head? are all of them like that? or am I totally missing something?

european CA's have 4 port heads, but all others have 8. CA18's have Intake auxilary butterflies. 4 of the ports on the intake manifold have butterflies. there are 2 ports for each cylinder.
