Megan Racing downpipe with flex sleeve
Megan Racing testpipe
The downpipe fitment is absolutely atrocious. Fuck.
#1 It hangs like 1.5" under the frame rail. I wanted to drop my coilovers by that much and if I do, the exhaust is just going to get obliterated on any speedbump. There is will be like 1" of clearance if I drop it.
#2 The bracket that connects to the damper on the transmission was an inch too low and and inch off laterally as well but that is a different story.
-I did drop my tranny and have to tilt the motor down. It seems like maybe the motor is tilted too far back but this is probably not the cause. I replaced the tranny mount and torqued it down perfectly so the motor is sitting properly.
-The turbo elbow is connected correctly. The exhaust manifold, turbo gaskets and bolts were replaced in Japan so there is no issue there.
Unless I'm doing something wrong, this is the first and the last time I will be buying this Megan shit (should have probably gone with a Circuitsport or Blitz - I didn't think it was that hard to fuck up a pipe).

hahaha... dude... I was in the same possition you were like a year ago, but lower (slammed on 15's) and my flex pipe frekkin scraped on the street when I did 3 point turns (cuz the street kinda humps if you can imagine) which of course ended up with a hole in my flex peice. Freeways were fun, esp when I get startled by the freeway marks.

Just take your downpipe to your local muffler shop and have them chop and reweld like about an inch on the "down" part of the downpipe. It costed me about $20.

If you bought that from a certified megan vendor they can have megan send you a brand new one absolutely free.

Cut and reweld for best clearance.

this is not a defective item.. most aftermarket 3'' downpipes are like this. my blitz downpipe also hangs lower than the frame rails also and so do many others i have seen.

follow the other guys suggestion of getting it cut and rewelded. thats the only solution unless you get a downpipe custom made. i may do this to my blitz downpipe as well.. and weld in a flex section while im at it.

i have a hks one, and it's the same thing, hangs lower than frame

either cut/reweld or buy that flat downpipe in the mid section, the new jdm tyte hawtness

either case, once you slam the ride, it's going sideways on every bump anyways...

Well, i've gotten non-defective bad fitting megan items from certified vendors and they had no problem issuing me new items :D

Cut and weld, almost ALL of them.

It works!

Most downpipes and cats hang below the frame rails. Mine has a grinded down flat spot on the bottom now, hah.

that's normal for most downpipe.
it's the reason why company like CS created this.

it's also one of the reason why I like to run 18" wheel so it'll rasie the car back up.

yea but what im saying is its not defective because thats how they are made. even if you get another one its still going to hang low like that. you can resend back to megan over and over and over again and will get the same downpipe. you will need to cut/reweld regardless.

jspec to the rescue,
that's the flat hotpipe i was referring to, makes me wanna get one since i'm too lazy to find a place to cut/weld, lol

I am running a cs downpipe and love it. Also running 18's now and no more scraping. Scraped everywhere on 17's though.

just go top mount, no more problems with scraping at least (with any of the decent kits). :)

how would a top mount make any difference in terms of downpipe clearance unless you are routing the exhaust out of the hood

GSXRJJordan
05-21-2007, 11:38 AM
^^^ cause topmount means new (higher quality/better designed) downpipe.

I dont like the CS downpipe because there's no flex section. No flex means more stress on turbo studs/nuts, which is no fun.

I run the Megan downpipe, and keep replacing them (for free, thanks Steve @ Megan) when the flex pipes get worn, but I'm getting mine chopped/rewelded within the next couple weeks. That IS the only solution.

well that was educated

its actually pretty damn helpful if you hate having your manifold crack

Quoted fo troof. I've gone through a few sets of studs and a couple manifolds, and I can't stand replacing that type of shit unless I'm upgrading.

I had a MR one that had no flex pipe and upgraded to a Greddy one and that helps a little. Prolly going to have the exhaust shop cut it to tuck it up more.

I think pretty much everyone's hangs down that far.

The only thing I don't like about the CS pipe is that you gotta pull it off the turbo instead of going from the elbow. Annoying if you are swapping trannies and clutches.

Bingo. Flex sections are a must unless you like broken shit. As for the CS piece, it's nice but an absolute fuckall to install the bolts to the turbo. I'd much rather hack up and weld a $60 Ebay downpipe than try to install that monster.

Just did 2 transmissions and left the cs pipe on. We did it no lift and no air too. With air it would have been super easy with the pipe on though

Your manifold wont crack if you use the transmission mount for your dp and if you dont have old saggy nasty crappy exhaust hangers. If you are that worried about it make a turbo support off the valve cover with a spherical end to give it enough play to expand and contract. Or just realize that all tubular headers and most cast will crack eventually anyways.
