Remove the 8 bolts for the cover.

Label the sides on the diff and the output shafts.

Remove the bolts for the bearing caps. Use a flathead to remove pry the caps off.

At this point a clean and calm environment will help keep everything in order. The parts inside the pumpkin are side specific so when something is removed, keep it to their respective side.

Use a mallet to remove the output shafts. After enough hits, they slide out. If not, pry them out using your imagination. I had to use a chisel and an assortment of tools used as spacers.

Use 2 bars, extensions or breaker bars, and place one on each side of the middle section and puch down both sides at the same time to remove the open diff

Place the diff on the vice to remove the ring gear

Luckily the open diff has flat sections to help with the torque necessary to loosen the bolts

1 breaker bar for the bolts and 1 breaker bar for the table to stay in place. Loosen in a criss cross pattern.

Install the new bearings. Lay the LSD on the floor.

Start one bearing with your hand to make sure it is going to go in evenly.

Use a mallet to put it in place.

It will be flat, but in order to ensure complete flushness, use a piece of wood and a hammer.

Clean off the bolts to have the threads spotless.

Lay a drop of thread lock into each hole along the edge to drop down the threads.

Place the ring gear on the LSD and line up the holes correctly. Then lay some drops on each bolt.

Tighten them by hand in a criss cross pattern.

Place the unit on a vice with a towel to protect the LSD as much as possible.

An extra pair of hands will be needed to hold the diff in place. Placing the torque wrench over the middle allows for the easiest tighten method.

Ring gear is torqued to 100 ft-lbs.

Clean out the pumpkin.

Note: No need for brake cleaner as the pinion gear is already lubed up and in place and placing brake cleaner might roughen things up around there.

Complete the side bearings with these.

Drop the unit into place and install the small spacers first. Then stand the pumpkin on its side and install the thicker spacer on the left side. The large spacer will have to be malletted into place. I lubed it up with liquid wrench and place a towel over it and mallet an extension until it is set in place.

Note: please remeber the small spacers are side specific; there is a .25 - .3 millimeter difference which makes a huge difference for the life of the LSD.

Remove the side oil seals with a large wrench or a hammer. Be careful as to grab onto the oil seal by itself, not the pumpkin.

Mallet them into place and use an extension on the edges, 4 corners, and hammer them until you feel that they are flush.

Bolt down the bearing caps to 70 ft-lbs of torque.

The infamous prussion blue test. 100% GO!

Wipe off the prussion blue and clean the surface with a gasket scraper and clean micrfiber towels.

Place the gasket on the mating surface and bolt the cover to 35 ft ft-lbs of torque.

Gears mesh. I check by hand, felt better than the kaaz and on par with the Nismo. I really don't have the tools to measure all that stuff. If you look into the FSM the calculations are very long.

I started with an open, then to a VLSD, and now this. I am very anxious to test it out.

Question.. is there any play in the output shaft on one side? I got a used tomei in a s13 pumpkin and 1 shaft moves in/out a tad. The other side is flush and zero play. It looks identical to your 2nd to last picture of how you see part of the bearing peaking out and the other side hidden. I have yet to install it for a while longer.

The output shafts should stay in place. I would unbolt the bearing caps. Remove the output shafts. Re-insert the input shafts all the way. Finally, install the bearing caps and bolt down correctly. I saw that happening in another thread, it is crazy to imagine that happening.

FYI, if you can't afford to borrow or buy the alignment tool to measure backlashing, use brakequiet goo, put a nice dot on the rign gear, rotate, and see where it meshes. Slightly unbolt the shims that hold the diff down, and adjust with a screwdriver until its seated right. Bolt it up, repeat.

While it may be tedious, its better than having a rashed ring gear.

Diff is with a Mechanic that has the tools and resources necessary to dial everything in to spec. I feel very relieved that it will be working 100% for the track car. He said there was too much play in it. He will take care of it tomorrow and of he needs a shim kit it will be ready by Tuesday and I should have it broken in by Wednesday!

So...if you complete the install and do not have the proper tools, take it to a shop that can check and adjust backlash and the meshing on the ring gear.

I will let you guys know how much it cost. The tools themselves can be around $70-$150 so I can justify having someone else doing this part of the labor.

I went to pick up the diff today. I placed threadlocker on the bearing cap bolts and that was a mistake I did. Mesh is right in the center and it was check with prussion blue. Blacklash is within spec!

Tomei- drop that bitch right in.

I will install it in the car tonight and get pictures up of everything to finalize the write-up.

So with the spacers, those have to go in I assume? I have a friend that didn't install the thick one and just hammered the outside bearing cover with a block of wood. His diff is pulling to the right and jerking around.

THEY NEED TO GO IN!

OMG, that diff is not going to last a week. Open it up, pray it is survivable and do it correctly.

I finished the LSD install last night. I just have to upload the pictures and I will be all set.

Time to move to the car. These are the two bolt locations; the left hole has 2 bolts and the right side has 1.

There are 6 bolts on each axle. Unbolt the 12mm nuts and bolts.

There are 4 bolts on the driveshaft. Unbolt the 14mm nuts from the diff side. There is an edge holding the bolt in place.

Drop the exhaust from the hangers; use with caution if you do not have the transmission bushing in place connecting to the downpipe.

stick one hand through the subframe to grab a hold from up top and use the other to hold the bottom side. There are small ledges where your fingers can grab on to. Pull and maneuver out of the way; passenger side up towards the trunk and the driver's side to the front of the car.

It is very tight to get to the rear bolts on the subframe. Even with a swivel head, it is difficult. I torched the section with a ... torch and proceeded to hammer the trunk floor for some clearance.

I was kind enough to take this picture while the diff was laying on my chest; this was the best out of 3 or 4 pictures I took. Make sure to take this hose off, the clamp is weak enough for you to just pull the hose off without having to pinch it open.

I used a S13 pumpkin and the S14 bolts are too long for it. Place both washers on the bottom portion with the curved one acting like a dome on top of the flat one. I decided to cut a little bit off because it would have hit the pumpkin and possible sent in the bolt sideways. The fix; install S13 bolts. I will S13 bolts with this diff, but this is what I had for the time being.

I filled the diff at this point by leveling it out with a hammer on the driveshaft section. Then I proceeded back to the car. I tried to lift it in place, but it was just not safe at all. I grabbed the jack to make things alot easier.

Bolt the front and rear bolts in place; 80 ft/lbs of torque

Bolt the axles and driveshaft in place and viola!

Complete. Break in the diff correctly; half hour of figure 8s accelerating on the straightaways to 20km/h and dis-engaging the clutch on the turns with the steering wheel at full lock.

Go back home and change the fluid and now go rip it at a track near you!
