My S14 KA started making a noise a while back and I cant seem to figure out what it is. Its comming from the front of the engine where all the pulleys are. I sprayed the pulleys with some WD 40 to see if the noise would go away but it did nothing. The noise sounds a lot like rotors are being turned but not as loud. Engine oil is good an full.
I dont think it rises with the RPMs... its hard to tell... motors itself is kinda loud
Anybody have any idea what it could be?

forgive me for my ignorance, since the only 240 i've owned is SR powered
possibly the timing chain?
my dodge pickup sounded like a chainsaw before i did a timing chain swap
there was a little under 3/4" play, when there should have been about 1/8"s

Check the belts. Maybe the belts are old or loose or maybe the pulley is loose...just a guess...

Put a screw driver on the top front of the cam cover and your ear to the back side of the screwdriver (sounds funny - I know). This will allow you to pinpoint the sounf its it is in fact the chain. I bet its the front chain glide.
Awesome!

I was listening to it earlier and it seems to be making two different noises and they both rise in pitch with the rpms. One is the high pitched grinding noise like a bearing is bad or something... and the other is a whirring-whinning noise
And I also get a slight ticking noise near the valve cover

how old is your water pump? my brothers 240 was making a noise like that and it ended up being a bad bearing in the water pump. i believe thats what it was. check your alt as well.

well i just did the screwdriver to ear trick an found out the ticking is just my injectors and the grinding noise is my air conditioner compressor.
Now gota figure out what that whining noise is.

are you sure the whining noise is coming from your engine and not your tranny?

im positive it is comming from my engine.
I just found out I can just replace the clutch in the compressor.
Anybody know how? Part number for the clutch?

Sounds like the bearings on the A/C compressor are failing - time to replace. Same thing can happen on the alternator, water pump, idler pulleys, etc.
