View Full Version : How to go about socketing/chipping ecu?? Clueless.

Well, I am pretty much brand new to the whole ecu chipping deal. I have done some research however, but I am still a bit vague on what is exactly needed to get my ecu chipped.

I do know I need an ecu (common sense), but I also learned you need to soldier an adaptor of sort to fit a chip in order to work. Can anyone give me a run down on what is needed exactly (equipment and such) on getting my ecu prepared to fit a chip (looking into purchasing one from Horsham. But other options are welcomed)

My setup:
- CA18DET
- Stock block unopened engine
- SR T25 turbo ( .64 turbine housing)
- No BOV
- Stock MAF (will be purchasing a Z32 in the near future)
- 8 psi stock with no boost controller (I have a ball and spring turbosmart one waiting to be installed)
- Stock side mount
- Stock fuel system
- 3inch exhaust (2.5 inch downpipe, 3 inch high flow and stainless exhaust all the way back)
- HKS induction cone

I did do some searching on here and came up with a little info here and there, but nothing seemingly concrete. I have also emailed Horsham, but since I am sure he is quiet busy, I probably wont hear back from him for a few days maybe.

Thanks, Chris.

the chip attaches to a socket which is what you should be soldering. You will need a soldering vacuum. You can find it in the soldering section of whatever electronics store you're in. Hopefully, you can understand a pcb board when reading the instructions. Don't burn the board...I hope that you know how to solder :x:

soldering iron - pick one
solder - resin core .60
soldering vacuum
pliers

What I am more interested in is the socket and the chip itself (I will probably have the board done externally and watch em how to do it, pay them and do it myself eventually).

As relating this to a regular computer, a socket is similar to say, what you would use on a pentium 3 for example. Now, where would I get this socket from, how many types are there, what chips mount up to em, etc.

My game plan. Run pretty close to stock setup with a chip, front mount, MBC, and FPR. Car needs to be extremely reliable and tracktable. No big numbers here.

Thanks, Chris

Ahh I see what you're asking Chris. Yes, the socket, is like what you would use for a P3 or P4 to connect onto the motherboard.
Bikirom site looks good

Glad we are on the same page drew :hsdance:

And thanks for the site nrg. I will be reading up more when I get home.

Now, heres another question. I have figured it to soldier on an eprom low profile 28pin socket. Now, where would I get one of those from?? I will probably remove the ecu this weekend to get a better handle on what I am looking at.

Thanks again
