in the fastback they both go in the doors and the shocktowers but in the coupe i think the shocktowers can take bigger speakers....i dunno it's been a while since i've been system shopping since i got mine a while back but i'm pretty sure that the towers in a coupe can take bigger speakers

the coupes have 4x6 in the fronts and 6.5s in teh back. if you have active speakers...make sure to take out those door amps if you have an aftermarket deck...The 4x6s were a problem in my car with active sound system. I bought some bostons and they didn't fit. So i returned them for the 4" JLs that comes with a 4x6 conversion piece. Even THAT i had to cut to make it fit...good luck

I have those active speaker things and I replaced my door speakers and deck and it doesn't sound that great, is it because of those door amps? I didn't see any amps in there when I replaced the speakers, where are they at? Thanks.

If you had amps in your doors you'd know right away, they're giant metal and plastic POS's that the speakers bolt to.
If you added aftermarket stuff and didn't notice a HUGE difference in sound quality, something's up... are you running your speakers off the deck's power? That's a no-no... sounds good on paper, sound like arse to your ears!
What setup do you have now? I'm sure we can help.

no no!!! help me!!! i have active speakers, well, i have a "blaupunkt boston cd189" w/ 188 watts head unit. and a 400w blaupunkt amp in the back powering my 2 12"s in the trunk. since my headunit has 2 sets of pre-outs, i set the 2 12"s as rear, and the 4 front STOCK speakers as front. and i turn the balance so that almost 80-90% of the power is in the rear (the 400w), and the front is hitting just fine. but now i'm going to buy a set of 4x6's for the door, they rms @ 35 and max @ 105. so they should be just fine to go over the stock speakers ontop of the stock amp right?

I don't know what power my speakers are running off of. The wires that were connected to the stock speakers fit straight onto the aftermarket speakers. It was pretty much a clean exchange of speakers and head unit so I don't know what could be wrong. The most noticeable lack of quality is in the bass, it doesn't hit very hard and is real flat. I figured it was a result of the hollow plastic doors and rear wells ("shocktowers").
The speakers are Polk and the head unit is a Kenwood. You need any more info? Thanks.

Just thought I would mention that 4x6's Suck. If you care about how your system sounds, put 6.5's in the front. All you have to do is get a 1/4-1/2" peice of MDF and cut it to fit over the opening and cut a whole for the speaker in it and mount the 6.5 to the board. Will sound MUCH better. I've done this to 2 240's already. I will be doing it to mine this weekend. I will take pics and post.

1/4" MDF, unless you feel like sanding and shaving a good third of the half inch stuff Way to tell if you have an active speaker (aside from the "active speaker" printed on your grilles), is if there are electronics behind the speaker rather than just the wires.

Now, on to my own selfish question: Where can I find an adequate dirt cheap four channel (~50 watt) amp? New or used, and the name doesn't matter to me. Current setup bridging my amp makes my sub sound like ass. Unbridging makes my mids sound like ass. I want an ass free system dammit!

Blue
Blue w/ white stripe
Blue w/ Green stripe

Black = ground (duh)

Need help with the other four

Hey, I think the black is ground

As for the others, find a speaker you don't want anymore and start experimenting. I believe all will make sound, one will push the speaker out as it plays (sounds shitty and will damage speaker after a while). Another will pull it in as it plays (ditto). The other two. . . uh well. . . get a mutimeter or flip a coin
