I bought a 90 fastback with a twincam, and it ran fine for the first few days, but now it's wierd. I can be driving down the street or freeway, and the engine will randomly cut out completly, either just enough to make it stumble, or long enough for me to have to pull over and stop on the side of the freeway. But it will always kick back in. This is my third S13, but my first KA (I bought all my others with blown motors and swapped them) so if anyone could point me in the direction of what I should start looking at, that would help.

distributor going out? fuel filter clogging? will the car shut off and then after it cools down start up like nothing's wrong?

It'll start up instantly after shutting off whether it's hot or cold. All afternoon today it ran fine.
One thing though, the air filter keeps getting dirty on the "clean side" with soot.

Check battery ground, and battery positive from alternator to battery.

Basics first :)

Preach RitZ ! ! !

Just sounds like there might be corrosion on the terminal(s) it'll probably be most on the positive, if the car was not taken care of then on both. but handle the simpltons first. Check all connections make sure nothing is moving loosely.

Thanks guys! Although when the engine cuts out, nothing else does. The gauges and lights still work... I'll go over everything tonight anyways.

How old is your fuel pump?

Sounds like a fuel delevery problem.

Change out your fuel filter while you're at it.

fuel pump is a 1-year old Walbro 255. I might as well change the filters just as regular maintenence

When I had similar symptoms it was the coolant temp sensor

The one up top near the upper radiator hose on the block

you know that may be it.... I know the temp gauge is supposed to read in one of 3 settings, cold, normal, hot, but mine will read cold, just above cold, and 2 other temps in addition to normal. I'll defineatly pick one up, wow, in addition to replacing my doors, fenders, and taillights, I've got my work cut out for me this weekend...

also check egr....carbon buildup (soot) could be the egr choking your car/ somehow backfiring it into the airfilter?

There had been an aftermarket air/fuel controller installed. I removed it and it has been fine since. Looks like the wiring was coming loose at one spot.
