I've got a 1996 240sx now with 140,000 miles on it. The car is running great with no idle problems or anything but I wanted to ask about the distributor cap and rotor.  I have no record that the previous owner ever had this changed...Nissan says change it every 30,000 miles but should I even bother since the car is running fine (if it's not broke, don't fix it)?

"better to be safe than sorry"  Just change it. Have you changed your plugs and wires too?

About a year ago I had some of the Crane Cams Fire Wires put on so the plug wires are pretty new (of course I've not heard from other 240sx drivers if these are GOOD wires or not, lol) and right now I have those nasty Bosche platinum plugs in the car that were put in at the same time that the wires were put on. So, how hard is it to change the distributor cap? I actually took time to sit in the car and let it idle in my garage today and just listened to it and about every second it drops from 800rpm to 600rpm...then back up, and right back down...in a smooth pattern...any clues as to what's going on?

could be a small vacuum leak...  or something dirty in the intake system.  there are SOO.. many variables.

My 96 has fully electronic ignition.  No cap or rotor needed.  If you don't have the fifth wire coming of (what looks like the rotor) then don't worry about the cap+rotor situation.
