View Full Version : What kind of Limited Slip Diff is everyone using?

I have a 98 240sx SE, the one they built w/o LSD or ABS, and I'm researching different types of diffs to figure out which one is best for my situation.

The car is basically a daily driver (no winter driving), although I've been known to slide a corner or race someone durring my daily drive. Maybe some stoplight sprints on the weekend. No autocross, drag strip, drift competitions or anything like that. The car is currently n/a but I'm hoping to turbo it next year and be putting down 200-250 hp.

With that said, I'm torn about what kind of diff to get without sacrificing comfort and drivability and without breaking the bank. I'm not about to spend 800-900 on a diff. If I understand what I've read correctly it seems like either a stock VLSD or an aftermarket helical would be best, but I would really like to know what everyone here thinks and what people are using in similar situations.

So... opinions and real life driving impressions please!

Turbo w/ open diff? waste of money. Well, if you're going to turbo it any not go to any events, it's already a waste so...hey, ur choice

If you will never use it at events, then just get nothing. Why do you care, in daily driving it's all pointless anyways. If you want something to put on your mod list, get a VLSD. It will wear out soon and have no effect, thereby not changing drivabilty or comfort.

HLSD's don't work if you lift a wheel
Clutch diffs need maintenance and make noise
Welded makes noise

by process of elimination you should save your money, spend it on rent, new clothes, education for your kids.

well, i'd spend the $800 or $900 on a 2-way before i would turbo anything but that's me. i'd go with vlsd from what you've described and if you really want something better then the open diff. you'll get better traction at least until it wears out as optionzero said. i suppose that would depend on how hard you beat on it though.

oh, i had a vlsd in my s13 for about a year and i have a kaaz 2-way now.

Yeah, you're right, what's the point of any of it? Why don't I just sell my car all together and rollerskate everywhere..

And if you'll notice I said I want to get a diff now before I turbo the car next year. Just because I'm new to this forum doesn't mean I'm an idiot, and it doesn't mean I'm new to Nissan or tuning cars. I joined this forum because the last forum I was on started to suck because everyone acted like an ass.

I just wanted to know what people are using and how they like it, I don't need people talking down to me.

S15 HLSD. Know in about a month how much power it can handle.

I read the 5/23 thread before I started mine, it mainly just talks about getting your diff welded. That seems to be suggested in many of the posts on here. Also just a lot of brand names thrown around, get a Nismo, get a KAAZ, etc.

I didn't start this post because I don't know what an lsd is, or if i have one, or how it works, or what options there are out there. I know all that already. I even already narrowed down what types I would get. All I really wanted to know is what people are using, or have used, how much they liked it or hated it.

NSD. No slip differential.

from what you explain u want i recommend vlsd. u wont have no wheel hop when makin slow turns and it isnt that harsh. u will get better traction over the open diff but i noticed at times the vlsd will burn only one tire. for example when u pull a 1st to second gear and the tires break lose it wont always spin 2. but pretty much for hookin up when pullin off it works and doin your little burnouts etc.

Running a weld diff here, flyberts SPL, daily driving for 6 months now no problems.

you need neither a VLSD or a welded diff...

the fun part with any 240SX isn't in the straight aways... we are slow...
