View Full Version : S14 Gas Tank....

Ok, I have read several places that the gas tank on my 95 is 17.~ gallons which I thought was odd. I always thought it was a 15 gallon tank. This is because I have never been able to put more that 14.2 gallons in the #### thing, even when I thing I am like out of gas. Last night my gas light came on for a bit and I was like on empty, I go to the gas station and it takes 13.5 gallons??!? I thought it might of stopped early so i try to top it off and the #### thing overflows. So it just seems that the tank is not 17.~ gallons. Anyone ever put more than 15 gallons in the tank?

from what im looking at (edmunds.com) the car has a 17.2 gallon tank, keep in mind that just because the light's on, doesn't mean youre out of gas...it just means you should get gas fairly soon..my sister used to run her camry passed E all the time, and never ran out once.

I always seem to refill at 13 gallons... never gone much farther than 14.

Well it must be able to go for awhile with the light on. On all my other cars which had 15 gallon tanks i always ran them till it would take 14.~ and that was EMPTY. the needle must drop below E a bit then.

Sir,
I do believe I've cramed 15.2 gallons of premium in there before. So I think it's 17 gallons... generally my fillups are around 14 gallons.

hmmm weird I have a 95 and I don’t seem to have a light i have never seen it... how many miles do u get out of a tank usually and when does the light go on? hmm maybe the leds dead or a fuse hmm...

Maybe I just refill early I get it when I have a little less then the last quarter around 200 to 230 miles and I only fill up at about umm the most 12-13 gal
I don’t want to risk it because my sensor seems to be a tad inaccurate

hehe btw has anyone ever completely ran outa gas in their 240? What was the mileage?

What octane do u guys use? And do u feel it’s worth it?

many cars have a "reserve" in the tank, really they just tell you to refill 2 gallons before they run out

my camry had an 18.2 gallon tank with a 2.25 gallon reserve

i could drive almost 60 miles past the big E

Jeff240sx

Sheesh... I ALWAYS drive past the E.
I think that I have about a 1/4 tank below the E, so when people say I am on E... I say, "Nope.. gotta nother quarter to go." My light has come on a couple times... and I can go for about 15 miles with it on... then I stop to get gas. In fact, right now, I am 1/8th tank below E.
And yes, I have gotten 17 gallons of gas in my car.
I use premium, and get about 400 miles to a tank. I think it's worth it, because the manual says to, and I hear the KA24DE needs it due to advanced timing.

i usually drive until my car is slightly below e...on average i get about 300 to 350 on a full tank...and i don't drive like an old lady or use the freeway often either...i use 91 octane (it's the highest available near the academy) and just use octane booster...

I tend to listen to my manual. It says premium fuel only. I use premium fuel only. It gives better performance and better gas mileage. And it helps the timing our cars have(part of that 15 or so hp more than the s13 engines) not knock or ping.

And she learned this from her parents, and possibly you people that dont trust gauges or just fill up early have sub-conciously learned from your parents or friends at an early age.

Well... time for the canadian perspective... I think it is 55 or 60 liters... I think 60 though. Usually I fill up around 3/4 of a tank (so I don't get moisture in the tank during winter) I have found I get the best mileage on 94 octane gas (only one place sells it... petro canada and they have a bunch of fuel additives for winter) but yah, I usually but about 40 liters in on about 350-375 kilomters... and I sit in traffic, idle, idle some more, and then idle some more, so it is not horrible, worse than my neon though. My neon you could beat the shit out of and it's mileage never seemed to change. The 240 when driven nicely doulbe mileage over when I am pushing it...

I once got about 430 miles out of a tank. And after that many miles I could only put in about 14.~ gallons. Went I calculated the milage it was about 31 miles per gallon.
And yeah I think I was taking it easy maybe got on it a couple of times. But I'm in the city a lot. That was about a year ago and I've never been able to get that high again. I usually get about 380 per tank though.

i'm not filling up till i hit the 350 mark.. ( i hope i don't run out,, i drive pretty hard,)

the reason i usually fill up as soon as it gets to the line is because i've run outa gas in my ol 92 lumina.. the needle was still restin right at the empty mark too.. fucking american cars.. needless to say, i'm warry about that now.. sucks to run outa gas.. any of u ever done it? Even better yet,, have you left ur car running and locks the doors?... woooOot.. yeah. i'm forgetful... not naymore,, cause both of those incedents reaaallly sucked.

You're right. The gas tank is in fact 15 gallons in volume. 15 and 7/8 to be correct. I found this out on the back of the Nissan Tech Books.

That would be for the S13, though. Nissan lists the S14's tank as 17.2.

On the back of the '95 Service Manual, it says 15 and 7/8. I'll check again to see if I've got the right information.

OK. I'd certainly trust the FSM more than I would the brochure (http://socal240sx.org/faq/specifications.html) or my '95 owner's manual (which actually says 17-1/8; closer to 17.1 than 17.2). What would be *really* convincing, tho', would be a TSB that touches on the subject.

I will definitely check it. I know my '91 is definitely 15 and 7/8, but I'll check twice for the '95 that I looked at.

Once i got 15.7 something in a 16 gallon tank. The thing would start to stall out as i slowed down, because the gas would slosh to the front, and fuel pressure would go down.

I never run my car down as low as some of you. I was told long ago that if you run it down you will suck up and crap in the bottom of the tank. I guess if you guys do it all the time you keep the tank clean by sucking it into your filter. Maybe I worry too much but I like the better safe than sorry approach.

Well, the fuel pump always sucks gas from the same place, no matter whether the tank is full or nearly empty, and that place is near the bottom of the tank. So, yes, even though you didn't ask me, I'd say you worry too much.

Gismo R
02-24-2002, 01:03 AM
The gas goes through a fuel filter before it's sent to the combustion chamber. And if the gas you get is so bad that crap goes to the bottom of the tank then that is very bad gas and you should report it to the gas company you got it from and never buy gas from there again. I've heard something similar to what Goodsx said but that it's the gas in the tanks at the gas station. But this is usually only due to the fact that the gas station doesn't have a steady flow of custumers getting gas therefore the gas just sits there and gets old basically. So it's prolly a good idea to get gas from some where thats used a lot where the tanks are filled often.

I once locked my doors with the car running and my low fuel light had been on for 6 (yes "6") days--I only worked about 2 miles from home. I was about to shit a brick because I worked next door to a locksmith and there was NOBODY inside. Luckily they had an after-hours van pull in after about 25 minutes.

I agree with you. I have only let my light come on once in my 240SX because I didn't have any money to fill it up that day. I almost ALWAYS fill up before it hits 1/4 tank because I don't want to clog up my fuel filter or get moisture in the tank. The one time I let my light come on, it was cold outside and it took me 3 times to keep my car running because of the moisture. I agree with the "better safe than sorry" approach. You can still accurately check your gas mileage if your tank isn't empty.

I just filled my tank to 15.2 gallons today, I've had the light on since Friday. I drove to and from work yesterday (~10 miles total) and today I drove 4 miles to the gas station. I don't usually let the gas light come on, but I was broke. I fill up once a week or so, around 300 miles a week. The gas light is at the bottom right of the gas gauge.

Is it a different one then the little gas symbol next to the gas gauge? Or does it just change colors, at night its white does it change to orange or something?

That little black gas tank is just showing which gauge is your gas gauge. A yellowish-orange light will come on when your gas is low enough.
