There are a few differences between the two starters, but a KA24E starter will work with a KA24DE engine. My starter crapped out, and banging on it no longer worked. I put a KA24E starter into my '93 S13 and it works like a charm.

The difference between the two is that the KA24DE starter has a larger opening where the starter gear is, by a few millimeters. Also, the gear on the starter motor has 8 teeth, as opposed to a 9 teeth gear on the KA24E.

Here are the part numbers:
For 89-90 part number is 23300-30R01R
For 91-98 part number is 23300-53F11R

I'm not sure if a KA24DE starter would work with a KA24E engine, but I would assume the starters are interchangeable if it worked the other way around for me and a few others from posts that I've seen in search.

Sorry for the long post, but thought I'd share so that someone would be able to find it in search, should the info be needed.

It's an old thread, but I'd like to confirm what is posted. The starter on my 95 KA24DE went bad so I ordered a new one. When I pulled the old one off, I counted 9 teeth. The new one had 8. I was a bit skeptical to put it on but went ahead anyway and it starts even smoother now than it did before... Although I did have the 9 tooth one on the engine for years.

Thanks!

From my experience, all KA starters are interchangeable...
