Mike, I failed smog because of too many hc's. You know for a fact that acetone reduces hc's, or you think so? Just checking because this may be my solution. How much should I add to get my hc's down?

thanks bro!

I still don't think I'd put it in my car, at least not my 240.
But, everyone seems to be talking about it.

In the other forum I frequent (for my Explorer which really could use the improvement) several people ran some tests.

Here's a link about some tests:
http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/...hlight=acetone

And heres some chat:
http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/...hlight=acetone

There are a bunch of threads there. Not 240 related, but just thought it might be interesting to read.

I just read up on a very large site on acetone in gas. I'll be adding in some, go get a smog, and we'll see what happens. I'll report back.

HC limit for my S14 is 100ppm
I tested in at 140ppm 2 times.
so if this gets me under 100 it will be a major success.

I'll let you guys know.

Acetone's got a lower flash point than gasoline. So it effectively lowers your octane level. It's just like how you get better MPG with regular gas vs premium. Lower octane also means a greater chance of detonation. This is an octane reducer not booster.

So you will have the following problems:
1. Pre-ignition of the fuel
2. Damage to fuel lines from normal acetone properties
3. Water in acetone condenses inside cylinders, or rusts out your gas tank
4. Ketones and other oxygen-bearing organics like ethanol have been known to produce carcinogenic incomplete combustion products in exhaust.

toulene is used as an octane booster and does in fact work.

Dunno about gas mileage tho.

You can get it like at paint suppy/hardware stores, etc.

Acetone in Gasoline

Acetone can help with gas mileage. It can also get you more power, because when your gas is sitting in your tank, each gas molecule has 4 hydrogen bonds with other gas molecules around it, making it hard for your fuel pump work harder to break those hydrogen bonds to get it to fit into the fuel line. Acetone also breaks hydrogen bonds, meaning your fuel pump can suck in gas much easier. Also, the main reason that acetone saves you gas is because normally when fuel comes out of your injectors, it wants to stick together because of those hydrogen bonds, and it causes your injector to stay open a little longer than its supposed to. When acetone is in gas, most of the hydrogen bonds are broken, so the injector closes earlier, so the proper amount of fuel goes in. Hydrogen bonds also make fluids have a high heat of vaporization, meaning it is harder for your engine to burn those molecules, so it doesnt completely burn the fuel each stroke, this is also compounded because you are going to have less fuel in the cylinder to start with because the injector closes earlier. So all of these properties of help each other out, which is why it can make such a big improvement. Basicly, hydrogen bonds cause your engine to go through all kinds of hell, and acetone breaks hydrogen bonds.
