SR20 Tranny problem - 56k beware!!!!!!

Backround of the problem:
I recieved my motorset from J-spec autosports and was very pleased with the condition of the motor. Until I then realised that I could not move the shifter out of what appeared to me to be 4th gear, and I could not wiggle it or pry it loose.

I was reccomended to me that I open the transsmission case and check to see if it was either stuck in a gear, and if it was then to just reset the tranny to neutral. But i don't know how to do that!

Or if that the transmission is just bad. However seeing as how this is the first transmission i have ever opened I do now know what a transmission that is stuck in gear looks like, much less a bad one.

I am able to spin the drive shaft both forward and back wards and watch the gears spin, so logically to me that would mean that It is not in any gear because I would THINK that if it was stuck in 4th gear it would not be able to be turned in the reverse direction however I could be wrong because I am certainly not an expert. I have included some pictures I took maybe you can tell me what you think, if this doesnt let you know anything then I can take more pictures, sorry they are so large but I just got the camera and dont know how to resize.

Your pictures aren't even on the right gear. That is the Reverse and 5th gear. You'll have to grab the case and hold one of those shafts (the easiest to hold) and hit the case to pull out the entire gearset.

To reset the transmission to neutral take a look at the shift rods that are connected to the shift forks which go around the syncro sleeve. The sleeve is what you need to move so it's not around the speed gear and the blocking ring. The blocking rings are the goldish looking parts/teeth you can see. Slide each one to the middle so it's on the syncro hub and not on either blocking ring. To check if you have it in neutral. Take the thing and turn the input shaft. You should be able to hold the output shaft and still turn the input fairly easily.

Make sure you don't do anything but take the gearset out. You shouldn't have to dismantle any further than that. Getting the inserts back in can be a bitch if you haven't done it before.

If you should happen to run into anymore problems with the tranny just take some pictures and I'll try to walk you through it.

Alright, Now that you explained that this makes A LOT more sense to me as to what I actually took pictures of, I am out now to expose the rest ofthe gears, I will take more pictures then

alright, after about 30 minutes of trying to put the casing back on after setting it to neutral I finally made some progress ( i think ) because i can now shift into 1st and 2nd, but no other gears, however being able to shift into first and second is better than it being stuck completely in 4th, so I am guessing I am on the right track? :hammer:

Your problem might just be that your syncros aren't lined up. Turn the input shaft while you try to shift gears, or get someone to turn it for you.

Well, after a few more attempts of putting the casing on, I would be able to get it to shift into all 5 gears, but then after bolting everything back up it gets locked into place and wont let me shift anymroe so i have to disassemble and reassemble and try again. this is frustrating!

Is there a special trick to getting the rear-casing back on? I have tried twisting it a bit, then setting into place, tried different shifter positions while im placing it back on, and the few times that I was able to shift I didnt notice how i positioned it, or if it even matters

I've thought about it, but i was just seeing if i can fix my SR tranny because I already have to take the rear casing off for a Bellhousing swap.

Even if I was to do a bellhousing swap I am not sure how to get the rest of the transmission out of the bellhousing, because If in my pics all I see is 4th and 5th gear, how do i get the rest out??????

It should just go right on. If you can't shift into gear and the shaft gets harder to turn when it's all together then there might be a gasket or a thrust washer missing in the transmission.
