ka24de timing issue (pics)

ok car is a 95 s14 ka24de. ka24det if it really matters. so it was running perfect until oil pump went out. so i pulled the motor and replaced the oil pump along with a new timing chain kit. everything was installed according to fsm specs.

car starts and idles good. but as soon as i give it gas it kinda struggles. it doesnt rev up like it used to. so i check the timing with a timing gun. its obviously off but i have to turn the distributor fully clockwise just to get it close to stock timing which is 20 degrees btdc. now i know thats not normal but car runs a little better but its still not right. i can drive normally but as soon as i mash the gas pedal the car goes nowhere. power is not there... just feels and hears like the intake is sucking a lot of air.

i took top chain off and took pics putting it back together.

crank pulley set at tdc.

cam lobes facing outward.

timing chain marks lined up with cam sprocket marks.

cant really see it but silver chain link lined up with mark on idle sprocket.

distributor marks lined up before putting it in.

cant really see it but how the dizzy marks look when inserted.

dizzy rotor lined up with #1 wire

so did i do anything wrong?

mines non T lol, but i had the same prob when you stepped on the gas.

the timing was all messed up. i did the same thing as you, pulled out the dis, and fixed it.

also changed the fuel pump, fuel filter, cleaned the sparkplugs, and sprayed some w40 on the maf.

buuut, you could start by checking the ecu if it flashes any codes

You're a tooth off, unless you've fixed it already...

As for no power - My money is on plugs wires out of order. It will start and idle fine if you mix up #2 and #3...

...i.e., firing order is 1-3-4-2 (going counter-clockwise on the distributor)

If you have it 1-2-4-3, it will start and idle just like normal...but drive for shit. No power.

So check that.

If you have to turn the distributor all the way to one side to get it close to 20 BTDC, you're a tooth off.

You need to move it whatever way it needs to be moved so that ~20 BTDC is in the middle of the adjustment. Set it to TDC on #1, and use the #1 plug wire as a reference...and move the dizzy so that the rotor is pointing towards ~11-o'clock.

now when i move the chain a tooth over, do i just move it over on the the cam sprockets only or idle sprocket only? or do i move the chain one tooth over on both the cam and idle sprockets all together?

your a tooth off on the dis

restab the dis

when u stab it wiggle the rotor so it clicks

in your dis shaft picture

you need to line up the mark shaft with the mark on gear(DIMPLE) left of where it is in the picture

irrc

i will check to make sure from fsm when i get back on the computer for you

^^^ What he said, kinda. You're a tooth off on the distributor. No matter what the marks show, it should be at 20-degrees when the dizzy is in the middle of the adjustment range.

(EDITED - NVM, reread)

can anyone take a pic of their dizzy at tdc? i've tried putting the dizzy in many different ways but it still has to be adjusted away from the middle...

tdc on the rotor should point around 9-10 o' clock. and spark plug 1 on the distributor cap can be lined up right before the rotor. doesnt have to be right dead in the center. like everyone said you can be a tooth off, so try rotating the dizzy.

also...when you insert the dizzy, the rotor will rotate slightly clockwise. so make sure that prior to inserting the dizzy, the dot doesnt line up with the groove. have the dot line up a few mm to the left so that way once the dizzy is inserted and it rotates, it lines up when its in position.

timing kit is probably some generic brand. bottom was setup according to fsm. seems unlikely i could install the lower chain wrong... just lined up the marks. but not sure how or if it could skip?

i actually took a look at a friends ka24de and i couldnt get my dizzy to match up like his. his rotor was in between 9-10 o'clock but mine would always be either before or after. i would start the car on both positions and its either too advanced or too retarded.
