J30 VLSD into an Open Diff Pumpkin

OK.. Before I attempt this swap on Saturday I have a couple of questions.. I have read all the posts, not just on this forum, but other forums and websites as well. Most topics deal with just pulling the open diff R200 and putting in the J30 R200V with caution pointing towards the longer snout because of the ABS.

Well I am going to remove the VLSD from the '95 J30 pumpkin and then put the VLSD itself into an open diff pumpkin while using the gearing from the open differential.

Yes, I have 3 differentials.. Two open differentials (one on my DD and one waiting to have the guts ripped out) and One J30 differential. Just in case I run into problems with this, I can still drive my DD until I get what I need..

So.. Why am I here? Is what I am attempting even possible? Can I use the open diff gearing on the VLSD? I have new side seals as thats what I have seen as the only item needing replaced when the output shafts are removed.

Am I missing anything? Am I on the right track?

Thanks ahead of time..

im sure there is tons of info here within zilvia on this. to make this a little easier for you.

yes the j30 diff may fit into a r200 housing

yes the ring gear is interchangeable. 240sx = 49:12 (4.083) / j30 = 47:12 (3.916)

you must reset rear gear to be within specification

You must use the correct output shaft & axle combination.

enjoy!

Dude, why don't you just use the j30 diff already built? I put one in my car that has a non abs drive shaft and have encountered zero problems. But if you insist on basically rebuilding one kudos, but it will not be fun.

First please be aware that you cannot mix and match different ring gears and pinions even if they are the same ratio. Basically the ring gear and pinion that are made together should not be separated.

Now if you want to do this right you will definitely need more than just the seals. I highly recommend getting the FSM because it has all the specs for turning torque of pinion shaft, ring gear run out, ring gear to pinion backlash, etc. As far as parts you will need side bearing adjusting shims and pinion head height adjusting washer set. You need these parts in order to adjust the mentioned measurements. Oh and I hope you have a dial indicator to use for the measuring.

Ok.. Great information.. I will take pictures and keep this thread updated with what I find.. I appreciate the honest answers..

And the reason I am wanting to change is to keep the correct gearing ration and not have to worry about the driveshaft length..
