S14 Cluster Temp Gauge Reads OVERHEATING But Sr20det is perfect Temp HELP!

Ok guys heres what im dealing with. S13 Sr20det swap into 95 S14 Chassis. Harness done by Wiring Specalites etc etc. Just completed swap, Runs like a champ. I noticed when i went into the cabin for a test drive, My s14 gauge cluster was basically reading the car would be overheating. So we used a infared gun and started testing the temps around the motor and all were in perfect operating temperature. So we decided lets swap coolant temp sensors, So we did and bang the same thing, temp rises on the cluster, but the motor is in perfect temp. My question is do i need a ka temp sensor instead of the jdm sr20det sensor? Or is it more problems than that? Any help guys please!

I have a built ka in my 97 and my temp randomly goes up like that too. A friend of mine has a s14 sr in his 98 and it does the same thing...I would just ignore it or get an aftermarket temp. gauge.

I had a s13 sr in my s14. It did the same thing when I started the car within a min. it would read that the car was over heating. The way I fixed it was I got the temp sensor from a s14 KA and it fixed it.

yeah, im not sure if its cause of the jdm sensor, or cause is an s13 sensor in the motor. but it you go to your local automotive store just grab a s14 ka sensor, and it will fix your problem. sensor is down by your thermostat.

Wiring is wrong.... Double check the wiring.. I know it sounds like a pain in the ass, but if it is shooting up to "H" when you key on or are running the car, the wiring is incorrect. Trust me. I had the same problem while doing a swap.

You have to match the cluster with the sensor.......so if you have an s14 you need the s14 sensor

Yups water temp sensor. S13 water temp sensor in the S13 SR sends a different reading compared to an S14 sensor. Swap the smaller water temp sensor and it should be good to go.

Not true. He just needs the S14 sensor for S14. Cluster is no difference.

While everyone is correct, i wouldnt even waste my time with the oem crap.

Get an aftermarket gauge that will save your ass if anything were to happen, instead of relying on the oem POS gauge. Once it actually starts moving up if you have an issue, its usually too late.

Or ignore the sensor and run a full wideband coolant temp gauge.

You run the water temp sender(single wire) that matches your cluster (S14 or S13).
