Yep, bottom one is EGR which stands for exhaust gas recirculation (it puts exhaust in your intake) where as the other one is the AIV (air induction valve) and it puts fresh air into your exaust manifold to make it leaner so the cat heats up quicker.

Unless you are having problems with it, don't touch it. I seriously don't think the gains are worth the trouble. I did take mine out, but thats because I had the motor out and wanted to clean up the engine bay so I removed both of those systems and made a block off plate for it.

For example, my only vacuum hose(other than brake booster) is one going to my fpr.

yeah im pretty sure there's some info floating around on how to remove emissions equipment. and they sell some egr block off plates on ebay....but really....there's no point to removing any of it unless you want to clean up your motor a bit.

Most SR guys ditch it when they lose their stock turbo elbow (the most restrictive part of the stock SRs exhaust)... on an NA KA, there's really no reason to mess with it.

No, SR guys lose the AIV because it won't fit on a LHD car. JDM engines don't have EGR.

The biggest benefit to removing it is easier access to the top bellhousing bolts.
