Getting started on my VQ35/S13 build..

I ripped my SR out today, fenders/bumper, and steam blasted the entire outside of the car, from top to bottom. I'm waiting on Marco at SR20store to get me pricing on my body panels, so I can get started on the chassis. I'm actually building the car exactly like Marco's setup.. but, doing a different paint scheme, and rims. I've got my paint/clear already.. Dupont tri-coat Burgundy metallic, and Charcoal metallic with silver pearl for my clear coat. I'm going to two-tone the car.. just haven't decided the layout yet. The car has to be stripped down, windows removed, etc.. so we can prime the entire chassis.

As for the engine.. I'm doing a VQ35, with JWT C2 cams and springs, bolt-on's, Maxima harness/ECU, and direct port 100hp nitrous setup. That should yield a pretty mean street car..

Now THAT'S how you clean your car..

Progress has been a little slow.. as I started sanding, I discovered a ton of small dings/dents that weren't very visible before. So, I've been smoothing the car out slowly. I've also decided to shave the upper body line.. I think the car will look a lot more smooth with that line taken out. I recieved my Silvia body panels today.. and roughly fitted everything. She looks so nasty right now!

Lots of sanding left to do!

The rims that are on the car right now, aren't the wheels that are going on the car.. I'm putting a set of 18" SSR D5R's on once the paint/body is completed.

I'm actually using a VQ out of a Maxima.. Basically the same engine, just a slightly different cam profile and intake manifold. We have been installing VQ's into the FWD B15 SE-R for almost a year now.. with great success. I love the power that the VQ35 makes.. It's got a very broad powerband, which makes for a very fun street car.

I have to give credit to Allen, and the others who have done most of the leg work to get the VQ into the 240sx. I'm going to go one step further, and get the VQ35's ECU/harness working in the 240sx. This means getting the drive by wire system working, but, it shouldn't be terribly hard. I've got a firm grasp on the Maxima/Altima wiring harness layout. The engine will remain relatively stock, for now.. ARP rod bolts, and a set of (soon to be production) JWT C2 cams/spring package, will be the only internal upgrades. This will allow a safe 8K RPM rev limit. A 100hp single fogger wet system will top it off.. for now.. But, I plan on building a forged stroker over the next year or so.. and turbo is the eventual goal..

VQ is super easy to come by. Every maxima since 95 has had them. The 35 started in 02 so those are a bit more scarce but still not VG territory. Running low mileage VQ35's regularly go for less than $800 at yards. VQ30's go for $400.

My suggestion for the tranny if you haven't decided would be the Z33 6MT. Good luck with the swap. Ask any questions you have when you get to getting it running as that is the hardest part IMO.

I'm shaving the body line, because I think it'll make the car look a little more sleek.. Just a matter of personal preference I guess. I'm not into riced out body kits, car shows, and stuff like that.. I just want a clean, fast street car that turns a few heads.

The nitrous is going on, simply, because I have a kit sitting in the shop that's collecting dust. I can't afford to do all of this, and build/turbo the VQ right now.. so, this is a temporary option.

The VG is a overweight, overpriced turd.. The VQ has WAY more potential.. in the form of better flowing cylinder heads, lighter reciprocating weight, overall lighter weight (weighs about the same as a SR20DET!), and a stronger block/crank.

As for the trans... I have a 2004 G35 6spd with 12K miles on it, sitting in my shop.

haha true, beofre the 24o i had plans of going turbo on my 96 max but decided to try a FR platform for a change. now the 240 is gone so im thinking going A33 maxima. The vq definatly has potential no disagrement on that, i belive i read the stock vq30 block can handle about 500hp on stock internals but have not seen any proof yet, or maybe havent looked hard enough. IF you go turbo any plans for tearing down and rebilding the engine.

There's a few of the Maxima guys making 500hp on stock internals.. It's definately a stout engine. The VQ35 will handle about the same, but it won't tollerate high revs on the stock rod bolts.

Yes, I can also confirm the 500hp on stock internals. It's on Maxima.org...a long time ago though.

I've read (and agree) that the VQ35, since it is much bigger compared to the VQ30, cannot handle forced induction as well.

If I were going turbo, I would htink of the VQ30DE....like the Nissan JGTC cars with VQ30DETT for the GT500, and the VQ35DE for the GT300 (500hp and 300 hp respectively) in 2005.

The VQ35 will handle around the same power level with good tuning. A lot of the early FI applications with the VQ35, were with the 350z guys. Most of those guys that were popping engines, were doing so because of poor/inadequate tuning. With good tuning, the Z guys are getting up to the 500whp level with decent reliability. With pistons/rods, on stock sleeves, JWT is making 780whp/825wtq in a 350z. The only bad thing about the VQ30.. is that the crank isn't nearly as strong. It also sports the small 1.898" big end diameter connecting rods.. This give you a crank with less journal overlap, and more chance to spin a bearing because of the higher bearing face speed. And.. there's no replacement for displacement.. 1/2 a liter is a LOT. The cylinder heads flow much better as well..

Travis? BSwithTF? Glad to see you moved to the FR platform.

I vote for the VQ30. Thats my plan. Single T4 with a mid .6 AR.

I just build FWD's for customers.. You won't find anything BUT RWD in my garage.. This build has been a long time coming.. I just haven't had time to mess with it. I finally had enough, and just dove into it..

I've got a VQ30DE-K sitting in my garage, disassembled.. I was going to do that a while ago.. but, since I'm going to be all motor, the VQ35 was a better choice for me. Plus I plan to retain the CVTC system, using the Maxima ECU and harness. 12's N/A on slicks should be easily attainable.. And, it'll have enough balls to take out on the road course and have some fun.

We have replaced the welded parts with CNC'd billet aluminum parts..

With a stock VQ35, with headers/exhaust and intake, on slicks, the Sentra runs 12.90's @ 105mph. For a GXE or SE, the mounts would be different.. We would have to make some changes, to incorporate the SE-R K-member/Crossmember, shifter cables/assembly, electronic throttle, sub-harness, mounts, and a few other misc things. Here's a link with all of the details.. Keep in mind, for a GXE/SE, the price would be higher because of the changes that have to be made..

Sweet. I'll pass that onto my friend. Would you want the car sent to You or could you make a kit? Can you get some numbers on the 1.8s cost?

I would need the car here to fab mounts for the 1.8s.. They're totally different from the SE-R's mounting system. I'll PM you with some ballpark figures..

I have most of the body lines shaved.. I just have to go back over the car with some glaze and block sand it to the finish that I want. I must admit, this has turned out to be quite a bit of work.. It's a learning experience for me.. I'm not real big into body work/paint.. but, with the help of an experienced body guy.. I'l learning.

check the maxima forums. They've already done the swap before. I dont know which maxima forum it was. But It would probalby yield good help to check into it.

Yeah.. Allen and a few others have performed this swap already.. no one has done it using the VQ35 ECU/harness.. so, that will be a challenge for me.

I've got a few projects left to knock out.. I'm waiting on some CNC parts to be completed.. and then I can knock those out. I wanted to get my 240sx running, so I don't have to trailer it out there.
