s14 s14 battery relocation

I recently put a yellow optima battery in the trunk of my 96 240sx with a sr vvt black top so I could get rid of the little bulshit battery and everything is good but I was researching and seen that you should have a heavy duty fuse on the battery to stop a fire in in case the wire or terminals corode or short out. Could somebody out there please, tell me what kind of fuse I should use and where I could get my hands on one?

then you r running the risk of your wires running from the front of the car corodingand shorting and starting a fire once they get a little old

Dude I didn't use a fuse either and have not had any problems (on both my cars). And you should not have corroded battery wires anyway because you are supposed to change them to a heavier gauge wire.
But I assume you could just use a fuse block(the big one) like the audio kind and splice it in the power wire
Just my 2 cents

You need to find a 100Amp fuse or circuit breaker somewhere. With a previous car, I picked up an 100Amp audio circuit breaker from Circuit City and mounted it inside the box with my battery. I believe it was $30, but this was probably 5 yrs ago.

For those not using fuses, you should keep that advice to yourself. If you're fine with the possibility of burning your own car down, then so be it. You don't need to recommend to others that it's okay, since you are obviously not aware of the power potential in a car battery.

My problem with fuses on the main power cable was peak draw. i ran a 100A and it kept on blowing after i was driving with the heater, defroster, and stereo all going. yes there is some safty issues, but if you are that concerned then put a cut off switch in the system. when i removed the factory wireing there was about 2-3 ft of non fused battery cable that i replaced with about 12-15 ft of batterey cable, but then again all my clamps that hold the cable in place are rubber lined so an to be non abrasive and non conductive. also li covered any wear points with rubber to isolate it also. all of those things are kinda common sense but then again sometimes peope don't know about it.

untimatlesy it's up to whoever you are, but a cut off switch IS always a smart idea.

I ran welding cable so I am not to worried about then corroding this stuff is ALOT thicker and tougher then stereo wire or regular battery cable.

sorry to bring back from the dead. Perhaps i just need to be educated better in the electrical aspect, but why do some people use a fuse? The stock battery/pwer system dosn't have a fuse so wouldn't it be the same if i just extended the + wire to the trunk?

cuz stock the wire just runs through your engine bay, so a fuse is not needed. when you route it to the trunk there is a "hot" wire running through your car that carries a lot of power. that wire can heat up and cause a fire. the fuse prevents that by regulating the amount of electricity going through the wire. this only really happens when someone uses a wire that is not thick enough to handle the power, because a bunch of people run without fuses/ breakers and are fine. just make sure you have good connections, but the breaker is always a smart investment.

is there any detriment to running a shielded 1 gauge power wire within 6 inches of the ecu?? will it mess with the computer?

i'm in the process of running my cable right now and not sure where i want to bring it through the firewall. the ecu harness already has extra stuff ran through it for my guages. i found a spot (s14) right below the lower heater hose area...any other genious ways anyone can think of that would be better

You don't need to run a ground wire.. you can ground it in the trunk itself to the chassis.

Just scrape away the metal and bolt it to the trunk latch or something.

its better if you ground at the trunk and back to the engine bay

The biggest issue with relocating your battery to the trunk is when the cable runs back thru the firewall. If you have a slight vibration, the firewall can eventually start slicing thru the power cable and that will cause a short.

I second that, the same vibration shorted my wire and made my car die going down a bridge..

yea, i think i found another way (s14)...behind the ecu where the two blue relays sit is a panel. that panel there are two bolts that hold the door to the car. i'm thinking directly above that, drill a hole, add a grommet, run the wire between fender and wheel well plastic piece and then run it through the plastic circle by the windshield washer bottle.

When you move your battery to the trunk how do you check your timing? Also is it better to just run the cable under the car and into the trunk? I'm about to either replace my old amp power wire which goes from the battery to the trunk with some thicker stuff or relocate the battery to the trunk and just run some thick wire to the amp. What is the best solution?

A ground is a ground.. as long as you pull good voltage it doesn't matter if you ground it in 1 place or 20 places.

If you use a fuse distribution box like me.. you can jumper power for a timing light right from there. I ran my cable through the interior for the purpose of keeping the wire safe and protected. I used my old amp power wire. 4 guage.. people say its too thin, but I've never had any problems with it. Summits kit uses 4 guage.

How or where do you clip the timing light on it?

The stud in the front fusebox that the alternator feed bolts to is constant +12V, connect the timing light there.
