Because we started out with something like that (albeit a little cleaner) in 2004 for drag racing.

You are using 1"x1/4" SS304 Barstock, so there is allot of room for improvement.

Obviously you can get a crush bent exhaust made at a muffler shop, or you can buy on off the shelf piece like a Buddy Club or Circuit Sports and there is a price and quality difference.

My local mom/pop hardware store told me its ss302 (1.5"x.25"), which is the same as ss304, but with more carbon, making it slightly stronger. I know a little bit on types of materials and SAE grades and such, but to be honest, I have yet to take any materials/strength classes in my engineering program to really know and understand the various types and their uses.

To come up with a price of $50, I understand that it starts with cost of material, its availablity, etc. Then the quality and precision of such equipment as a Mill to drill holes and make slots. Then, clean and paint it to make it more rust resistant. Then, factor in labor hours in each step. Then finally the profit needed in maintaining the business and pay the web server bill and many other taxes/fees. It all makes sense. All I had was $8, my grandfather's drill press, a grinder, and a square, haha. I just like trying to make my own parts.

Like I said, its was just a conversation between me and a few others. I'll make about $4 profit, which I'd just give my grandfather for using his drill press, haha.
