Need people w/ welded/welding diff experience.
What's up everyone,
I just picked up welded diff for my S14. Lucked out and exact same NON-ABS diff case with all the shafts and everything else, so now I can just swap out my VLSD to welded on the fly. But I have taken some pictures of the welds, and they look pretty good...but I just someone who has more experience than I to provide there input. Now I will be taking it to someone who welds also for further input (before someone mentions it) but I'm out of town currently and will not be installing the diff until the winter anyways. But I have taken pics because I know a lot of guys here runs a welded, knows what good welds look like, and got experience with welded diffs. I myself will admit don't have the experience and this is new to me. But I just want to see if I should go ahead and pay to get the welds reinforced or if verify if the welds is pretty solid as is, and it last as is. I have circled one of the welds in red, because I'm a little leery just cause of how it looks. But on the other side and the rest of the other welds, it looks pretty solid. Thanks who can provide their input, I greatly appreciate it.

That differential is guaranteed to explode, weld splatter everywhere. you want one that'll hold? take it to an experienced TIG welder. Less contamination, more penetration.

Doesn't necessarily be TIG welded but it should get some more welds in there. If possible plate it also. This is a good example

Yeah, I was going to say I would be surprised if that diff even survived a U-turn. It needs a lot more welding than just that. Decent start point. Get someone to cut some metal to fit inside there and box it in like AxS13hatch said.

@OBEEWON & @AzS13hatch
Haha, well I'm happy that I didn't install it to test it out. Thanks y'all. I appreciate it. Thanks for the pic to AZS13HATCH. I will probably find a pro welder to go ahead and add the plates. One more question, does the plate need to be a specific thickness? 3/16 inch? 1/4 inch? 3/8 inch?

Although the plate should be easy to do, I actually didn't have any scrap laying around when doing mine so we just welded up some more and welded the spider gears to the casing. Good luck dude!
Edit: Those do look super weak. After re-reading some of the posts you really should just redo the welds. MIG/TIG is fine, just make sure to actually remove all the grease from the gears before welding. I mean really clean/degrease that sucker. Also make an effort to avoid splatter on the ring and pinion gears or you're gonna have a bad time lol. Last edited by bmaddock; 10-31-2014 at 08:55 AM.. |

But I', for sure now I'm going to take it to professional welder, let them sandblast it, clean it out and weld it properly. I'm not a welder nor have welding experience, so I'll leave that to the professionals on that end. I don't think he did flush all the oil out, I believe he welded it with some of the oil in there. The reason I speculate that is because when I got it, I had to hurry and pour the oil out because it was starting to leak on my back seats (the cover wasn't closed tightly and no gasket) and there was still oil left at the bottom of the diff.
