Steel Bodied coilovers

Does anyone know of a list of which coilovers are steel bodied and which are aluminum?? I need to find a set of steel bodied coils....at least the fronts need to be steel. Thanks!

Go to the manufacturer's site.

Or just take a magnet to it.

why would you want steel over alumniun? I guess they can resist greater stress? And KW variant 3 are stainless steel and so are eibach coilovers.

Steel bends rather than breaks, therefore an impact on it does not mean instant death typically.

any coilover made by BC is aluninum, as well as tein.

That covers (off the top of my head)
-megans
-a'pex
-hks
-greddy

Other companies that use aluminum bodied coilovers are:
k*Bee
buddy club
zeal
power by max (someone double check me on that)d

anyone know about koni's

Steel can be welded to a spindle!! I am looking to cut the stock spindle set up on my Y33 and welding the coil onto it rather than doing a full S-Chassis front suspension swap.

also, I was told that Megan Track's were Steel??

The majority of companies use steel shocks/struts with aluminum lower and upper mounts. That goes for pretty much all of the manufacturers you have listed there.

Koni's are all steel with the exception of the 2817, in which the lower mount is steel.

KW is the only company I know of using stainless currently.

I have Tanabe sustec pro S-OC2 's which are all steel. Thier perfect for dd but if your building a full on track/drift car you might want something a little stiffer. http://www.tanabe-usa.com/coilovers/s-ocII.asp

The main merit to aluminum bodied coilovers is weight savings. Aluminum bodied coilovers are extremely light.

I think Zeal only uses aluminum for the bodies when it's not a strut type suspension. Aluminum would be a bit too brittle for type of loads that strut type suspensions experience.

I heard they have the option of being aluminum bodied, however it's only offered for non-strut type suspensions.

For an S-chassis, the fronts will be steel (and inverted) and the rears will be aluminum.

Correctamundo

The reason Brian has steel front Zeals on his S14 is because the Zeals came with his car (when he bought it)

The Zeals from the previous owner was purchased a while back obviously, so at that time, I guess they were allowing aluminum for all around (front + rear)

Then at a drifting event (I think Cali Speedway back in the day), he snapped the fronts, which he then got replaced and serviced back to proper spec by Endless USA

On a side note, KBee's are not aluminum, except for maybe the upper mounts

ZEAL is 170% quality and in my opinion, THE best you can get.
I have had them on my car for years and love them.
I'm just bummed I can't swap them right onto a S13!!!
