2JZ Ring Gap

Re-building my 2JZ Vvti and want some opinions on if I should file my Wiseco rings or not and why my 2nd ring is already larger than what Wiseco recommended.

Wiseco - Top Ring (0.017") 2nd Ring (0.019") for street moderate turbo.

Toyota Manual - Top (0.012 - 0.016 with max of 0.039) 2nd Ring (0.014 - 0.018 with a max of 0.04) First numbers are std.

My top rings come in at 0.016 for cyl 1 and 3 and 0.014 for the rest. Think I should file the 0.014 to match the 0.016 or think I'd be fine?

Also the 2nd rings are coming in at 0.025 for cyl 1 and 3 and 0.022 for the rest. Gap is already larger right out of the box than Wiseco or the manual says but again its less than the max in the Toyota manual. Opinions?

Thanks,

Robbie.

larger is "better" but if its out of the box to big i would suggest contact wiseco and see if you can get a new ring...how are you measuring them? The way i was advised by many oldschool builders is to take the ring, set it in the cylinder and drop the piston upside down on it till the ring is straight/level then measure with a feeler guage...worked perfectly on my last 3 motors i have built...also the rule of thumb for checking gap is follow whoever supplied the rings recommendations eg: using Toyota rings follow Toyota manual as materials used and design can be way different from manufacturer to manufacturer

Yes I am using a piston to push the rings in to the bore to ensure they are straight and using feeler gauges. Using wiesco's formula for the top ring it is 3.386 x .005 = 0.017"(0.01693). So I will definitely buy a filer and file those rings down because 0.014 seems to tight when they call for 0.017. I'll email Wiseco about the 2nd ring gap because maybe they have a range as well. Their formula shows 3.386 x 0.0055 = 0.019 (0.01862) where all mine are 0.022 ~ 0.025.

Thanks for the reply. And after I said the stuff about Toyota numbers even though I'm using Wiseco your response was crystal to use what manufacturer I'm using. The rings look way different in regards to "thickness."

Called Wiseco and spoke to them. They say since I'll be running 15-30psi of boost to gap the rings to .007 per inch of bore. So my 2nd rings will be good and I have a lot of filing to do on the top ones.

nice! be careful with the rings if you don't have a ring filer...i did mine by hand which took forever lol. that should be a really fun ride with that much boost! The extra gap will be good due to the extra heat/pressure, don't wna break a ringland!

if you don't have a ring grinder then you can just use an old angle grinder cutting disc clamped in a clean vice. pinch the ring so it contacts either side of the disc and run it back and fourth.
