Ka24de, would old upper chain cause rattle?

So i just finished up my rebuild, car runs great. Only issue i have is my upper timing chain is making noise, i replaced the tensioners for both upper and lower. The lower chain is new but the upper is not. Both guides have been removed.

It kind of looks like there are wear marks on the valve cover from the chain but im not 100% sure that it is hitting the valve cover.
The rattle also mainly happens between 2-4k rpms.

I pulled the cover off and there's a puddle of oil on the tensioner so im pretty damn sure oil pressure isnt the problem. Hooking up a gauge tomorrow to be sure though.

The motor had 345k when i did the rebuild, so im thinking slack in the chain is the culprit but would like another opinion before i buy a new one.

I think it is probably slack in chain if it is original with that many miles.

Yeah it is the original chain, im going to pick one up later today. Hopefully someone else slides in with an opinion beforehand tho, im really unsure if this'll fix it.

Chain wouldnt be the issues, chains dont "wear out", per say. But ka24de chains rattle without those upper guides at high rpm,

is yours rattling the whole time?

My chain rattles around 2-4k rpms. And a little bit if you really mash it too. But at idle sometimes ill hear the occasional rattle, usually just a second and its gone.

that's a really short and girthy chain even at high mileage I cant imagine it would have stretched nearly enough to make it so loose that it would rattle with new tensioners

What brand tensioners and guides did u use got any pictures?

also the damage on the valve cover could be from an old upper guide. its very common for them to break and get stuck between the chain and the cover. all my valve covers have marks there

are you sure this is the upper timing chain making the noise and not something else?

Im sure thats what the noise is yes, it comes from right behind the front cover. I might just leave it idk, i have yet to try putting the new chain on as the car once again popped a vacuum leak [emoji25]

I just used advance auto tensioners. Had a bad one from the start but got it replaced so dey should be good
