Transmission Fluid

I've researched already on what transmission fluid to use. The problem is my sr20det transmission shifts rough. Doesn't really grind just really notchy. I'm wondering what kind of fluid should I use? Something with a heavier weight? I read somewhere that maybe 2 bottles of redline mt-90 and another bottle of their shockproof fluid? Anyone know a good fluid to make shifting smooth again? Thanks.

i personally use redline MT-90 in my tranny...no complaints so far except the fact that in cold mornings, it takes a little longer for the tranny fluid to warm up, but its not a big deal...just use anything thats rated at GL-4 (iirc) or above...

Actually, I wouldnt recommend using GL-5 at all in our trannies. There's a reason that The FSM says use GL-4 in the tranny and GL-5 in the diff. GL-5 has been known to destroy brass syncros and I wouldnt even dare think to run that thing in my car.

Now on topic for MT-90. I love that stuff. Thats makes my tranny shift so smooth. I personnally run 2.5 bottles (quarts) of MT-90 myself. Love that stuff

I've used redline Heavy Shockproof before and man that takes a long time to get warm. My tranny would shift rough for about 5-10 mins but after that, it was the smoothest oil I have ever used in my tranny. Personally thats too extreme for me since by that time, I've already made it to school and the tranny was shifting roughly all during that time. THen again I used 2.5 of shockproof instead of mixing it as you plan to do it.

IIRC, you CAN use GL-5 rated oils in the tranny AS LONG AS IT'S ALSO MT-1 RATED. I have a bottle of Valvoline that's GL-4/GL-5 & MT-1. That's okay to use in the tranny and diff.

75w-90 Mobil 1 synthetic gear oil is rated ONLY GL-5. That shit will eat synchros if it gets hot enough.

Ideally, for optimum (by a small margin) performance, you should use a GL-4 only rated oil in your tranny, like MT-90. It's nothing to lose sleep over, using a good MT-1 rated oil won't be noticibly worse than a GL-4 rated oil.

I have been using Pennsoil Synchromesh for the past three years. It cleared up an issue I had with getting into fifth gear. I had a buddy of mine use both redline and the synchromesh and didn't observe any difference except the cost (synchromesh is cheaper).

waaatch out with synchromesh. It's cSt (viscosity) @ 100 degrees celsius is much lower than 75w-80 gear oil. What does that mean?

Synchromesh is much thinner than the recommended weight oil for your tranny. It's equivalent to something like 5w-30 or 10w-30 oil. Once you start getting into sustained high heat applications, the outcome is pretty nasty :\

I've used Penzoil Syncromesh and it's been very good. I've gone on countless trips and it's never gotten bad. I'm probably going to try MT-90 this next change.

i run mobile 1 and shock proof mix in my tranney and h-lsd, i mix them half and half 75/90 M1 with light weight shock proof. my h-lsd is noisey so i drained a half quart of the mix out(wanted to check the magnet any way) and put a 1/2 quart of heavy weight in, didnt change the noise.

my old car went for 3 years with M1 and heavy shock proof and it brought the trans back from the dead, it ground bad 1-2 2-3 until i put the M1/redline mix in.

i bought some redline but its redline MTL 70W80 API GL-4. is this good for a ka tranny or did i buy the wrong thing? i remember someone saying something about GL-5 eating away at synchros. also it says MTL not MT-90 so im confused. i know its prolly a stupid question but better safe than sorry. thanks

Im switching to MT-90 also. Sounds like alot of SR owners like it. I've heard from a few DSM ppl MT-90 is the best to run, and those guys know tranny problems the best.

How many times have we gone through this cr@p? If you searched you would know there is already a thread about this topic. The best thing to had ever happened to my transmission is Amsoil gl-4. Mt-90 takes some time to properly warm up to operating temperature but other than that its OK.
