buying a car without the title

I live in California and want to know what the risks are if I buy a car without the title but the seller says he is getting a new one issued

Wait for the new one to be issued. He could get the keep the new title, your money, and take the car back if you don't.

GET one with a title. I did this one time, but I was working with a shop to get me a title. Ended up taking 9 months and more than I paid for the car in fees.

I've boughten a bunch of cars without titles.

1) Call local police and have them run the vin to see if its stolen
2) Go to dmv or AAA office with the owner
3) File for a transfer and pay them after its successfully registered into your name

You can also deduct from the total amount owed once you find out fees/parking tickets etc that have been built up onto the registration.

If they aren't willing to go through this, then don't deal with that person.

NEXT.

Suh-weeet... Sounds like a nice way to come up on a possible scammer. Might try this at some point.

I've done it in Ny. All you need is the previous registered owners copy of the driver lic and a signature. 20 bucks later new title.

Depends entirely on what state you are in. Most states... just stay away from cars without titles. There are a few states that will title just about anything without hassle though. Don't know about California but considering how dumb most of their laws are they either won't do it at all, or they will transfer some poor tax paying man's stolen car into your name for $25.

Lots of states will run the VIN to find out if its been reported stolen. I bought a lost title car and was kind of a hassle but worked out in the end
