Anybody ever find a way to protect s14 gas tank?

As any s14 owner knows, the s14 gas tank cracking issue is probably the most annoying facet to owning a s14. Without going to fuel cell, or continuing to swap out an OEM tank - anybody ever find a way to keep it from happening yet? Aluminum replacements, some kind of skid plate, etc?

As far I know there is nothing, I have heard of companies crafting up aluminum gas tanks for other cars if they can get X number of buyers - just curious if this has ever been solved by somebody.

I have also heard of rhino coating your s14 gas tank to keep it more durable.

To expand on Simmode1's point - unlike the s13, you have to remove the subframe to access the gas tank, which makes it even more obnoxious.

OEM tanks will eventually be discontinued as well, it would definitely be nice to know there is a more long term solution out there, outside of a fuel cell. I'd be interested in an aftermarket tank, so long as the cost was near or less than a new OEM tank.

I was under the impression it was already discontinued. The shop I had replace my tank the last time about the last 3 brand news ones he could find just to save for future use. Maybe I'm wrong though.

Not much to talk about here, if you've seen the shape of the stock gas tank. You would either need another used tank, or a custom fuel cell.

There should be plenty of room for a 10 gal cell thats not too crazy of a shape, what with the OEM tank being over 17 gallons. How often do you really need the 500+ mile range anyway?

i bought my s13 tank new a few years back. wait, maybe that was 5 years ago. but anyway, it was still available. i'd imagine the s14 tank is still available. and if you dont want it to fail, you make sure to put those rubber pads on areas where the tank contacts the body.

hate to bring up such a late post...but i have produced a method on how to repair our s14 fuel tanks...i have repaired my crack and no leaks at all...i do not use that jb weld epoxy stuff...took me 6 hours to repair but its great...i guess i will start to repair tanks for people...not sure how to go about it lol...i didn't wanna spend 500 on a new tank..and no sense buying a used tank for 200 thats the same age as mine and will eventually crack lol..so i figured it out!!!!!

Hey guys, I heard a rumor that the common cracking fuel tank issue only effects 95's. Does anyone with a '96 or a Kouki have this problem? Trying to confirm what Nissan may have changed if they did indeed fix it... Maybe just buying a 96+ tank will take care of it for good.

Idkn who is going to go to the trouble of removing their tank, paying a lot of money to ship it, being without a car (if your s14 is a dd) for a week or more to have it fixed with no guarantee of preventing future failure. Anyone in their right mind would just order a new one from nissan. I have yet to hear of a kouki with a leaky tank by the way. There is additional emissions equipment on the tank on 96+ models iirc so perhaps the design or construction materials were improved from the previous year.

Negative. All S14 gas tanks are the same. I've heard of all years having this issue. I think its more prominent in 1995 models because, #1) That is the year the most S14's were produced (in USA), and #2) Some 1995 models were actually manufactured in 1994, so even more time to age.

Yeah i know..i mainly posted for locals..cause it is big to ship..but its just something on the side i figured out..cheaper than buying used you know... I'm pretty positive how i set this up it will not leak at all lol...its solid haha very proud and saved a lot of money.. i mean if i wasn't a college student trying to pay for college then graduate school i wouldn't charge...its not really a DIY...i guess its just the way i did it...idk...but its awesome...no leak!!!

Do you have pictures of your cracked gas tank followed by pictures of the repaired tank? People need to know what they are spending their money on.

Smells like some plastic welding action to me.

Yeah I have to make a photo bucket account...and like I said it is mainly for locals by me, but i figured posting it here for anyone thats also local and not on any local pages on FB and just to get it out there as well...

Yeah Florida, but Florida figured out the way to fix the leak...6 months without a leak and I have very stiff suspension and it holds...i spent a long time and about $40 in materials so like I said..I researched and put some good quality time into this..with an after pic you can't really tell because its all just black and smooth..I painted over it, but it was the common crack right by the passenger strap

I managed to upload the before pic...the after is too large so I'm going to make a photo bucket and get better detailed pics! As you can see i guess its not such a bad crack. It does go higher..

I understand you are excited about your new found fix but at the end of the day you are fixing 20+ year old plastic. Who's to say the plastic won't crack in the next weakest point later on? Who wants to keep pulling their gas tank and fixing it over and over? Not to mention, who wants to keep paying someone else to do this job?

I'd rather buy a new OEM tank and not have to worry about it for the next 20 years.

makes sense...thats why did "repair" on a very large area for my tank so it doesn't crack at all on that passenger side. If I could afford a new tank I would have. I have nothing against that, but also how do we know they are even going to keep our fuel tanks in production? Im not trying to get rich lol. I honestly did this for me and thats mainly it lol If i can make a few bucks on the side even better..This is just all I could do at the moment...

Hence why I did research ect... so this lasts and I don't have to take out again!...such a pain to put back in!!

My s14 was made in 1996. I havent had any leaks yet. Where do they crack? That pic bmar posted was taken too close! I cant figure out where the hell he took that pic.

The gauge is way off...I have gone 100+ miles with the gauge below E and the gas light on in an S14 lol.

I also noticed ever since I put my battery in the trunk and redid the ground the gauge acts differently. It used to stay at full for 90 miles, and when it was at E it would take about 12-13 gallons. Now it stays at full for 150-175 miles, and at E will take 16 gallons.

Bought a brand new tank about 5 years ago, hopefully will never have to worry about it again. If yours cracks and a brand new one is available, I highly suggest going that route. As Killer said, you can repair the one crack, but the rest of the plastic is just as old and brittle. It's only temporary, I promise.

You didn't know about the reserve tank!? Pull up on the lever trunk opens, push down on the lever, fuel door opens, push sideways and 5 more gallons of go juice. Lol Nah man stock tanks are like 17.5 gallons bone dry.
