new to the 240 scene need got some questions!

hey guys my friend owed me quite a bit of money so he gave me a 1993 240sx with a kade engine in it.I PLAN (key word plan) to build a decent drift car/dd with power goals of 400-500 hp.i have a few questions about the engines you can swap. i do have a 96 supra single turbo so 2j is out of the question. I don't want to put a ls1 in there because i don't like the feel of the ls1 motor. I want to put the famous sr20 motor in the s13 but the question is whats the best sr20. some friends told me the red top and the black top are two different types of engines from different years. my question is what year is the best to buy an engine from? or is this just a load of bs my friends are feeding me and they are really just the same?

They are all pretty much the same, just a little differant. each one a better version of the last. either way if you are gonna try and get 400-500hp out of it, its is going to have to be fully built, so just get a red top. it came in s13's in Japan, so its the easiest swap.

to run that much hp on an SR, you will want forged internals, cams, head studs, a nice big turbo, etc.

you might also look into darton sleeves.

thank you, i guess they are all the same. i was thinking that the black tops had a better cooling threw the block than the red top but i guess they are all the same haha. made a vivid parts list and got some calls to make tomorrow about a sr20 redtop

Why do people still insist on running SR20s when there are better engine options out there nowadays. Most SR20s coming in from Japan now are engines that nobody wanted out there for a reason. They're either sitting out in some junkyard too long or somebody drifted the living crap out of it. If somebody tells you this engine only has 60-80k kms on it, ask them for the damn gauge cluster to prove it. The whole cars in japan gets junked before 100k is a freaking urban legend.

So what are the "better options"? I'd take an SR20 over the other options that I'm aware of. I'd also take a 2JZ I suppose, but I hate how heavy they are.

LSx? Yes its gonna be more expensive initially ($10k) but 300whp/350 ft/lbs right off the bat. Parts are cheap and you can just roll to autozone if you need some replacement part for it. You'd end up pushing that much money into an SR swap to get it to 300whp. Going RB25 or 1JZ will run you about that much too. 2JZ and RB26 will be more due to the costlier price of the engine sets and finding a cheap V161 tranny is gonna suck.

This^^ My friend was selling an entire Ls400 for $600. Could have easily parted out the rest of it and made all the $$ back.
Boost it and be done

It's going to depend greatly in what you want. A RB25 I would be a pretty good swap if your willing to spend the money and time.
