SR20DE Clutch

Buddy of mine picked up an S13 SR20DE for his S13, we pulled it apart today to reseal it and found it needs a clutch. He's on a pretty tight budget for a clutch kit so I am trying to find a cheap option for him, but there isn't much info about what will work with the factory flywheel.

Does anyone know of a kit that we could throw on it and keep the factory flywheel? From what I have read the DE uses a 225mm disk so a ka24e clutch/pressure plate should work, but I have found no evidence of anyone doing it.

Seems like the only other option is to throw a full DET setup behind it, I'm not against this, but I am just trying to find a cheap and easy solution for him.

If anyone has any ideas or input it would be much appreciated!

a lot of the DE's have the DET flywheel/clutch fitted.

im guessing the smaller DE flywheel/clutch would be lighter than the DET so I would also try to keep this if on a budget as it would help it too rev with less inertia etc...

round here we have places that remanufacture clutches, I had one rebuilt a couple years ago for an RB20 with new heavy duty material on the friction disc and stiffer springs for £80 which is probably about $120 us dollars. the guy mainly did truck clutches.

Edit: this won't work for a RWD application, the clutch disk is 18 spline vs the 24 spline on the rwd input shaft.

Yeah found a complete used spec setup locally for pretty cheap, probably going to have him grab it for a temp solution. A stage 3 6 puck is a bit over the top for a DE lol

That's very strange, as far as I was aware the RWD turbo and non turbo transmissions are identical.

You are talking about an NA SR20de out of a Silvia correct? It wouldn't make a lot of sense for Nissan to make 2 transmissions with the same case but different input shafts, especially considering they use the same trans on their naturally aspirated USDM engine. Also every Nissan trans from SR, KA, CA, RB, VG, VQ etc uses the same spline count.

Do you have a photo of the input shaft/trans you're working with?

Yeah RWD SR20DE, that clutch you linked is for a FWD SR, the FWD transmissions have a different spline count from RWD. Seems like the RWD DE uses the same pressure plate, but a different clutch disk.

Oh okay sorry about that, I read your statement backwards and thought you were saying his trans is 18 spline, regardless here's the correct part number that you actually need. Sadly this one retails for $335.01

As far as I've seen, and I'll eventually run into this with my swap, the only solution is to just grab DET stuff. There is no 225mm disk with a 24 spline in our market. I'm sure you can source one on YAJ or somewhere in Japan, but at that point it won't be cost effective.

Yeah, ended up up picking up the used spec stage 3 and det flywheel from a local friend. Its an absurd setup for an SR20DE, but this thing is going to be beat on so at least we know the clutch will hold up.

Thats what we ended up doing.

For anyone doing this, you need the DET throwout bearing sleeve to use a DET clutch and flywheel. It will not work with the DE sleeve.

What are you talking about, DE and DET clutch stuff is the same, throw out bearing and sleeve included, in fact I'm using a KA one on my car.

The RWD SR20DE uses a smaller diameter friction area on the clutch and flywheel than the DET.

Uhhh, I could be wrong but I highly doubt that. I have an SR20DE in my car, and I recently did a clutch job, in addition to replacing the one it came with when I swapped it in years ago.

100% not the same, have you ever put a DET clutch onto a DE RWD SR? If not, I don't see how you are qualified to comment on what is the same and what is different

Also, proof they are different, Nissan FAST says so First is a DE sleeve, second is a DET sleeve, different part numbers my guy

Yeah and a different throwout bearing sleeve, something I found no one talk about anywhere else. Posted that info here so if anyone else runs into the same issue it will help them.

Well, I bet a quarter that it had a DET clutch already installed when you got it.

Um, what part of I replaced the clutch that my own DE came with did you not get.

I went with the logic that if the KA24DE throwout bearing and sleeve works on a SR20DET then it should also be the same as the one on the SR20DE.

You're probably right, but at this point we're going to get into arguing over stupid useless details... It's apparently confirmed that the SR20DE and SR20DET use a different throwout bearing and sleeve.
