Question Question about OBD2 & emissions testing in CO

I'm moving to the Denver-area end of the year and I have an OBD2 240SX that I was planning on swapping an SR20DET into. It's mainly going to be stock for a while.

My question is, I was reading that if the OBD2 port fails to communicate they put the car on the dyno test for a sniffer test, is that true?

Mine is registered in Unincorporated Arapahoe County at a buddies house, mailing address is my office since most rural address don't have a direct mailbox; which means it's emissions exempt.

But, you could call them, they are very informative.

Also, you can try to get info here:

I was looking for some Facebook groups but couldn't find any, thanks!

From digging around a bit on various other forums, it seems like they'll try to read your OBD2 port and if it fails they just continue on and throw your car on the dyno for the sniffer test.

Must be nice to be able to be emissions exempt though!

So I actually did just call the Colorado DMV Emissions phone number and spoke with a very nice gentleman and he said:

1.) OBD2 port testing is only required for 2005 and newer vehicles
2.) Anything older gets put on the dyno for the sniffer test

Hope this helps out someone!

Also....Emissions testing is county by county based...

Up here in Routt County CO, it is only VIN verification...no OBD2 or sniffer/rollers...

Good luck!

I was really only mainly worried about my non-functioning OBD-II port, emissions won't be an issue as I'll have all all my sensors and catalytic converters and an almost stock exhaust.

Thanks everyone
