DIY test pipe?
When I bough my s13, one of the main goals was to have a hands on project that would allow me to lean and practice all sorts of things. One of those being welding.
One project is to replace the godawful piece of pipe that was placed as a makeshift test pipe. I have access to both a stick and MIG welder. Anyone has ever tried to cut and weld 3" pieces of stainless pipes to make exhaust parts as DIYers? I plan on using the existing flanges. If it's too expensive/tough I might just have to buy outright though, but making my own would be nice. Here's what's currently on there. EDIT: Looking at the picture again, reusing the flanges might not be possible for 3". This makes things harder... |

I get wanting to DIY, but can't you get a 3" test pipe on ebay for like $30-40? You can probably find a nice used one in the zilvia marketplace for around that as well. It seems like there are better DIY car projects to spend time on.

You are right, and there will be plenty on this car. I was mostly thinking of tackling this one thinking I could reuse the flanges and just weld a piece of straight pipe. But if not, it becomes much more complex.

You guys are right, I've spotted some cheap test pipes on ebay that should look much better then what's on there, not be a bottleneck and come with hardware/gaskets.
I do want to cut and modify the godawful muffler pipe though. I think the muffler is just hanging way too low. I think if I can raise it up, I can make something that looks quite a bit better (more straight/flush). I also want to weld a bung on the intake so my HKS can recirculate to it but I'll leave that to my friend who can do aluminum. I couldn't find an intake that included a recirculating bung. |
