Transmission issue

Hello ladies and gents. I have an 96 240sx and I just installed a 89-94 ka trans in it but I ran into some problems. The trans only goes up and down (1st and 2nd), doesnt go to the right, drives in reverse when clutch is engaged even though it's position in either 1st, 2nd or neutral. Do you think the transmission is bad or the mechanic didn't put the transmission back together the right way? Or can it be the shifter wasn't installed the right way? Any help would be good help if I can get this fixed. Thanks in advance.

i would pull the trans case halfs off and check to see if its stuck in reverse. next make sure the other gears are neutral gently pry it out . make sure it shifts to every gear before total assembly.

pull the shifter and see...should only be a few bolts and your cover or a c-clip to find out the shifter portion at least...how did you get it home after repairs were done?

It's still sitting at the mechanic shop but he's not trying to check to see what went wrong. He claims it's no good and I should get another so I can pay him $300 bucks to install it. I plan on getting it dropped off at my house today.

No. But I fixed my old trans bellhousing and swapped it in.

did you make sure it was in neutral when you dropped it into the casing?
and did you make sure all the shafts on the sift forks lined up with each other so the shifter shaft could slide between them?

im not very good with trans nomenclature but if you looked at the trans before hand youll know what im talking about

I didn't even bother checking that. I just swapped it out and put it in truck.

im no expert but it sounds like your trans is gonna have to come back out
and if it really is stuck in reverse you might grenade it shifting into a gear
it honestly sounds like reverse is engaged always and the reason you cant move the sifter to the right is because thats 5th and reverse. and the shift fork is engaged so now its blocking the shifter itself from going that direction.

The red squares are supposed to be the shifter as if it were engaging reverse to show you how it would block you from moving the shifter to the right

Transmission issue

I dont really know a whole lot about transmission internals but way back in the day my miata did the same thing, there was like a little fork in the side of the trans that got stuck and the car wouldnt go out of reverse, the shifter was in the neutral position and the car would reverse. I wedged a screw driver in and hammered it( to the side not head on ) and it fixed the problem. Apparently its common on miatas, maybe your 240 is trying to be a miata? Probably not gonna help you at all but figured id tell ya just incase
