KA Fuel gauge very off

So I recently changed out the gauge faces in my 90 hatch with a bone stock KA24E, and ever since my fuel gauge has been CRAZY. It fills up correctly, but drops to a half a tank in around 10 miles of driving. once it has reached the half tank mark, it stays there for roughly 30-40 miles, then begins to drop very rapidly again. I really don't think that the car is getting THAT bad of gas mileage, It does have a pretty bad exhaust leak, but other than that the car runs perfect. Anybody know how I could possibly correct this? I'm assuming I just put the needle in wrong, but is there a way to test when the needle is in correctly?
