build sr20det or buy rb25det

Ok I'm debating on should I build my sr20det or buy a rb25... a lot of people are saying stick with the sr cuz it's cheaper and can find parts easier....also I know a guy selling a megasquirt 2 and was wondering is it compatible with the sr...if not whats a good tuning program that I can use that's reliable and not stupidly expensive...also know someone selling aem ems...

If you don't have a deadline, are patient, and don't mind starting over from square one then go with rb25 but if not then stay with the sr. I went with rb25 in your situation, still have a long way to go and a good bit of fab work ahead of me but I don't mind it, more experience. You can't go cheap with the tuning software, most good ones are expensive.

When you say build the SR, exactly what are we talking about here? Build the engine but leave the turbo alone? Or are we talking about built engine/bigger turbo, the whole works kinda deal? Personally, if you are talking about the whole thing, stay SR since you already have a canvas to begin with. No point of starting over, spending another $7-8k on an RB25 swap and be stuck with with 250hp. Use that money on building the SR some, GT2871R, injectors and a rom tune...will be better than an RB25 swap.

I'm saying this since I've run both, actually running an RB 25 now. My situation is different since I blew my 500hp SR and had to start from scratch on a new chassis, after moving back to the states from Japan.

I would jump on this in a hot second if I had an Sr swap laying around. I was even interested in purchasing the long block, but I need VE pistons in the bottomend.

Hope you can move it without losing your ass on it.

OP, why do you have to build the SR? Like Flip said, if you have the SR platform, stick with it...

Thank you jr_ss.

I had no idea about the pistons being different until recently. I'm guessing they have to have valve reliefs due to the lift..

OP, I agree that if your stock engine has been taken care of and you don't plan on making any huge numbers then stick with it and buy bolt ons.

For <400hp I would not do anything more than a head gasket and studs. Maybe replace the main bearings if I thought the engine had a lot of mileage.

Yes, exactly. You can use non relief pistons, however you're stuck with the P11 cams. I plan on upgrading.

Lol. You've outdone yourself Mike. This is Ketchup from 240sxf, btw.

I think you can vouch for my engine...

Haha. I like the little fish.
