GPS tracking questions

Im sorry Im asking such a random question but no wireless places can help me and figure someone here has a gps tracking system,So I have a gps tracker that takes a sim card,The sim cards must be activated with a plan and each plan only lasts about a month so you spend about $20 minimum each month just to activate this stupid thing each month,Today I was thinking,I can buy a sim card for $10 and leave it in the gps tracker and install the tracker in my car,If or when my car gets stolen I could then activate the simcard and setup a plan and then track the vehicle,By doing this I wont have to pay those rediculous monthly fees. Will this work?I dont think they physically need the simcard to activate/setup plan? The downside is I wont be notified of my car being stolen so if this is a bad idea where do you get a card without those monthly bills?what do zilvians do for there gps tracking systems? Thanks guys.

I use the viper alarm gps tracking unit. its dope. only downside is it doesn't work that well inside concrete buildings, and not underground parking structures. that's common with most gps based trackers tho, not just the viper unit.

I feel like all the questions you have about sim card stuff should be asked to whoever the cell provider for that specific sim card.
