So has anyone installed one of these? Coming from the Miata world, they're pretty common with the BP engine since the crank/rotating assembly starts vibrating at higher RPMs and the damper seems to eliminate that.

I know that the RPM limiting factor in SRs are the rockers but I wonder if there's any advantage to be gained in <7000 RPM operation. At least in having a "smoother" running engine.

i have seen plenty of builds with dampers (SR and non SR). I also came from the Miata world many moons ago and that was a must if you were going to use anything other than stock, BP powerplants turn into a ticking time bomb if you put a non dampered crank pulley on it. other platforms seem to handle non dampered pulleys 'better'.

will it be stock, or will you be building it? if its the latter I suggest a ATI damper for added insurance.

I plan on keeping my engine relatively mild and not going over 300hp. I currently have S14 SR with S15 turbo, S15 injectors, and 300ZX MAF. Maybe it will lower engine vibrations at idle.

EDIT:

Another important thing to note is how the S15 factory flywheels are dual mass flywheels. I wonder if reducing torsional crank vibrations was the main reason Nissan used one in the later iterations of the SR considering how hefty these things are. Seems like an overly-engineered part if it was just designed to reduce the friction disc engagement.

is the stock pulley dampened? im gonna assume so; you could probably get away with buying a new oem one if you don't want to shell out money for a ATI (its double the price of the oem one). I don't have any direct experience with SRs, but I know the BP/Miata guys did that on mild turbo builds and got away with it just fine.

I googled "sr20det crank pulley oem vs ati" and got some hits. I recommend you check that out and see what people are saying as its specific to this powerplant.

Yeah, as I mentioned on the edit above, I have a suspicion Nissan came to later discover higher(?) order vibrations on the SR cranks and added the dual mass Flywheel as an improvement in the S15 generation.

I’d recommend an ATI damper even on a stock sr20 if it’s going to be driven hard.
