apparently there is a difference in the internal space inside the bellhousing, though I can't remember which is bigger or where the extra space comes into play.

totally depends on which year tranny.

90-96 TT transmissions have more room for a larger 250mm diameter flywheel
it seems there is a mix between NA transmissions. Gearing/case mounting is identical, but some of the NA trannys wont mount a 250mm flywheel and clutch assembly, while some others can.

i bought one which wouldnt fit the 250mm, and it took about 3 minutes of grinder time to make it all fit.

According to Mazworx's installation instructions:

How to tell the difference between an NA and TT trans.

1. The speedo gear on the NA is red and purple on the TT.
2. Measure the bellhousing thickness at the slave cylinder hole, the NA is about
½” and the TT is about 5/8”
3. If you have an NA trans, the you will have to use a
spacer for the starter.

Xcessive makes a spacer for the starter and Mazworx includes one with their swap kit.
