Is this something to be worried about? Rb20 trans.

Crack can be seen when looking down into the shifter input.

Is it something to worry about. Or just wait till it breaks, if ever.

Came upon it when diagnosing a trans leak.

Was not the source of the leak. The ebay short shifter with no seals or boot was leaking. Duh.

Gotta love previous owners...

Thanks.

Maybe that's from someone slamming the shifter side to side. Can the shift rod touch the transmission case?

Or it's from the drivetrain shock of dumping the clutch / fast shifting.

I dont know anything when it comes to transmission internals, but doesnt that look like aluminum? And it looks like there's a shaft with a gear coming out of it. Could be the base for a shaft with a bearing or bushing of some kind inside, which would mean yes, you should be worried.
Just my .02

Eta
On thw bright side, it's only an rb20 tranny

I wouldn't be overly concerned with it just yet. You'd be surprised how porous a casting actually is depending on the acceptance criteria. I can't imagine that they're x-raying any of these gearboxes for cars to check for shrink/or micro porosity. I would however imagine that if the melt meets certain tensile requirements that green is go.

Im not really scared about it, but Im new to these trannys, and this might have been one of those, "its just about to break" tell tales.

Its mated to an sr20det with a hx40 and 68mm wheel. Super lazy, but twisted the driveshaft on a hard 3rd gear pull on the hwy.

It made scary noises

Thanks.

Welp, it was detrimental!

So more driveline catastrophic failure, but no super scary noises this time.

That crack ended up going down and around the driveshaft yolk bearing support.

It really broke while romping on it today. The casting inside broke and pushed the bearing material around the yolk and burned it up. The casting also touched the new driveshaft yolk. It wore a huge deep gouge into it. It all heated up so much, it melted the brand new output seal and dumped almost all the oil! 75 bucks in redline gone!

Oh well, on the hunt for tranny options. Running into length issues since this is in a hardbody. Gotta find something short.

Sr/ka trans will work on a rb20 with using the rb20 bellhousing. Won't work on a Rb25. Ka/sr trans a weak id try to upgrade to a z32 or z33 trans if u plan to beat on it.

Thanks all.

New yolk is not a stock nissan part. Using 30 series u-joints now. Thanks Verteen.

I am running an Sr20det.

I have a spare z32 trans I was going to mount to my vh45/q45, so I can take some measurements. In stock shifter trim, its too long, but I know I can lift the access/shifter plate and move the shifter pivot to there. We'll see what that gives me.

By eye, and internet pictures, it looks like the rb20 trans and the 2wd d21 trans are the same, other than the bell housing. Maybe not identical, but very similar in length. This would be my cheap, hurry up and get it driving solution.

Right now I have the sr bell housing mated to the rb20 trans.

This is a fun truck to break!

Thanks. I think I misquoted, now that Im looking at your guy.

I bought 3 bottles of redline for 15-17 bucks each + shipping.

Here it is. I was high. Prices are right in line with out the mention of you

Part Subtotal: $52.85
Delivery & Handling Charge: $9.99
Total Charges $62.84

I order from summit cause they ship in 1-2 days, almost every time.

Unfortunately sometimes you have to pay for the "need it right now price"

Never fun.

Thanks though.
