hydrolic lifter help

im having lots of valve train noise in my ka24E. i searched all over, and found this thread http://www.zilvia.net/f/showthread.php?t=35333 but ofcourse as soon as i post, it gets closed.

im really wondering how to tell if my hydrolic lifters are bad. i pressed on all of them as hard as i could when they were in the car, and none of them budged. i took off the exhaust side lifters and when squeezed, only one of them budged and just a little. i tried submerging them all in oil, and poked a needle down into the tiny hole in the top of them, and got nothing. no air bubbles... nothing. theres also a valve next to the hole, like a ball point pen, not sure what to do here.

how do i tell if theyre bad, collapsed... what. does ANYONE know anything about these things???? thanks

im thinking maybe ill just fill her up with half ATF and let it run for a little, then put in some 10-40 since im running 10 -30 right now?
