it seems what you're describing is that you bought a small width wheel and possibly high offset. the wheels you see other s14's rocking that are hella flush etc. are lower offset wheels and wider

Yes. They would work, make sure you calculate the size of the spacer to the size of the gap you're trying to fill the wheel to be flush with your car

If your wheels are 40mm offset, and you buy 20mm spacer, your wheel will now be +20mm w/spacer and should be about flush to the body but im not a tire /wheel expert

need more info on wheels.

size, width, offset? What sizes?? 18 x what?

yes, sounds like you need spacers. Depending how sunk, sounds like you'd need anywhere from 10-50mm + extended studs and all that fun stuff.

Even better yet, sell the high offset narrow wheels, do a couple weeks research, and buy a new set that fit how you want them. There's no shame in trying again.

That would be ok, but nothing special. It would look better in 18x9.5 + 15. You would be hella flush when you have negative offsets. Im running an 18x12 -20 rear, and 18x10 + 5 front I'm gonna use a 10mm spacer to make it a -5
