s13 Completed 1UZ swap!!!! S13

Well I started out in 2009 and bought a s13 single cam from Mikerbike

went to my first drift event

It was awesome! Broke my first tie rod. Replaced it at the track (first time really working on my own car)

Then i got sick of the multi colored paint so I painted it primer.... Not sure why...

stock ride height ftl
so i did what any other 18 year old would do.

cut springs...

But a week later something came in the mail.
My brother is in the military and was in japan when he stumbled apon some some hks coilovers for 50 bucks! So he gave them to me.
Non ride height adjustable... Oh well

sold them for 500!

I had my brother pick me up some new ones i found on upgarage. We think they are KTS dampers, switft springs, and cusco top hats (anyone seen these?)

Man these are nice! Ride amazing nice and stiff, handles amazing.=]

The engine that was currently in the engine developed a really loud tick...

ya...

Replaced those rockers. sounded awesome... Then blown HG
swapped in another single cam. got it for free!
Mikerbike helped me

Ordered an ebay exhaust and header kit for cheap.

Broke my stock seat. Friend was selling this kirky for REALLY cheap, so i picked it up and mikerbike mounted it in my car. Rocked it for awhile drove all the way from utah up to idaho, wasn't the most comfortable thing in the word.

I painted it orange for some reason too..

Then i drifted last year with that single cam... Tell me you need power to drift HA

all i had was tension rods and and PBM rack spacers.

I then went to japan.
Got some jdm shit haha!

Airforce base "hobby shop"

DRIFT KARTS!!!!!!

I REALLY should have taken more pictures. Unfortunately my brother is no longer there.

Installed a tow hitch to tow tools and tires to an event in idaho... Looking back on it.. Waste of money! Haha Before I got my new truck and giant trailer i wanted to be able to be self sufficient with just the 240! lol
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hgsqaZYSO9c
Here is a quick video of said event. Smashed my oil pan and put a hole in it.
JB welded it together. Held for 5 or so months before I Swapped in a new engine.

I got a nice raise at my last job so i decided to "Upgrade" my car.
Paid $1500 bucks for parts car with a "freshly" (I say that because it has a rodknock now) rebuilt KA24de, with; custom T3 manifold, ebay turbo, awesome high mount intercooler

and TONS of parts. Ended up selling most of it making more than what i paid for!

First the thing ran like crap.
Then I didn't tighten the cam bolt tight enough, so the cam sprocket came off bending all my exhaust valves. Instead of rebuilding the head, I just bought another head.

Got a new head on it. Got it "started" head a loud pop then, nothing. Wouldn't start again. When i tried the starter it just span. 0 compression in all four cyls....

THIS THING! The damn keyway sheared causing ALL my valves to bend....

Got it all back together and it "ran"

Kinda....
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gIA2XE-9Wgs

I was in the mood to bash on something so i installed fender flares.

and got some knuckles made by Mikerbike
It has awesome awesome angle!

Still wasn't running correctly. So I got rid off all the variables, got a stock ecu, injectors, and maf. I was running sti injectors, chipped ecu, and z32 maf.
Ran! Awesome too! Lean though. Stock with 6psi with large turbo... 13 afr under boost haha
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nDkF0Ng3shA
Ran well enough to kill my POS ebay clutch. Over heated like a motha though. Probably wounded it that day.

Worked great as a hot dog warmer though!!! :S

stock flywheel and XTD stg 3 clutch, gone! haha
I got a spec stg 3 in a trade so that plus a new light flywheel.

Finally figured out that, with the board i was running in the ecu, I could run 2 tunes and switch them with a jumper... I had burned the tune on the secondary position.
1 jumper is all i had to do!
So now I had a ~250hp ka. It was rad! 6-8psi of boost was nice on the large turbo. Spool'd a little too slow for me...

So, by now i had grown up a bit and bought my self a 03 2500hd CNG so i could tow.
Bought a crappy trailer (later sold it for the same price i bought it. Even though the fenders fell off of it! Ha)

Also decided to paint my car white.

By now, I know how to drift decently and decided to go with Team D-Spare up to CO to drift in a comp

I only ran single comp since i didnt have a cage yet. Got second place because my "new" alternator went out causing fuel cut under boost.

All in all, it was flipping RAD!
ColoRADo!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8RU1f8DqQ1w
Brandon took 1st (purple coupe)
Nick Stucky took 2nd (red miata 190hp)
Mikerbike took 4th (black hatch)
William took 5 or 6th.(ae86)

Now... on my way home from an awesome weekend I hit a deer.... In my new to me truck (14 days to be exact!)

Took out; trans cooler, radiator, bumper support, hood, fender, belts, all the plastic... I was so pissed!!!!
BUT insurance covered it 100% It was very close to being totaled.

They did a great job on fixing it though!

Well,
Sold my rickity trailer and picked a super rad ~26 foot trailer.

Next smartest thing i did.

Hell ya cage! Cheap on from BDR fits pretty well!
Had to lower my seat for me to fit though.
Don't mind the horrible welds.

NO i didnt weld my cage if you are wondering.

Took the car to a local event.
Took 2 runs.... Got a rod knock. My Ka didn't even make it a full year.
This could be because of a TON a reasons. Pistons, the beginning where i had all the problems. Or my newest theory is that the oil pump died. When i took off the oil filter it was pretty empty...

So i was done with ka's
i wanted a little more torque with out a turbo..........
Yes....
you guessed it
V8!!!!!

1uzfe with a 350z six speed to be exact!
250hp 260ft tq at 1500rpms!
Thing is F-in radical!!!!
I will continue this Build in the next post to keep engines on separate posts.

V8 Time!!!!
Specs:

Engine:
1996 SC400 1uzfe
(261 hp) and torque of 363 N·m (268 lb·ft).
6-bolt main bearings
quad cam 32V
Thing is going to scream!

Transmission:
350z 6 Speed transmission

The adaptor i am using is from, XAT Racing.

I am also using their Quarter master 7.25 Clutch and flywheel set up. Aswell their pilot bearing adapter.

Tiny little thing is used in nascar (little worried about drivablity. Anybody use a 7.25 triple plate from QM?)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Started the tear down. I am not rebuilding this engine as it was pulled with ~120k miles.
Just doing minor maintenance.
Timing belt.
Water pump
spark plug
Wires appear to be semi new

Here it is being torn down.

Got the timing belt back on. (was not very fun! Had to re-do the timing a few times!

Custom motor mounts will need to be made. It's too bad the sump isn't a bit further forward....

More to come!

Nice thread, I think the KA still could been fun but i guess doing a V8 conversion is cheaper where you live? as there are plenty of them...

About that QM clutch it could be a little "direct", like a hydraulic motoxclutch

I've had 1 QM before and it was like that, depends on what plates u got there tho, thick or thin cerametal

Thin are the worst/most direct on/off

Are you planning to supercharge or turbocharge the engine?
Would be nice looking with a quad turbo setup, or at least twin turbo

Nice entertaining thread. Im sure the 1UZ will be loads of fun and reliable. I'd go to the trouble of replacing all of the seals and intake gaskets and what not. You know, things that could cause it to run lean and shorten its life. But im nitpicky like that. Thats going to be alot of fun. Are you doing all this drifting with an open diff? Maybe you mentioned swapping it out and i didnt notice?

All in all a very inspiring story, makes me want to get off my lazy ass and get to a track where the real fun is.

Ya i think it's a thin plate... Oh well it's not a street car by any means.
I might upgrade power later down the road. but for now i just want reliability

Nice things about these engines are the price. I can get a whole another engine from a wrecking yard for ~$250. So if blow this one up, I am not too worried haha.

Ya i forgot to mention I bought the car with a welded diff.

I also have Ikey formula RUCA and 1 cusco toe rod and 1 ebay one.

The car slipped off the jack stands and the jack stand hit the toe rod haha.

Update.

Small update.
My friend Michael Chandler from CamAutoMag came over last night and i got some work done...

I bought an engine hoist from HF for $150, so first i put that together.... Holy shit haha

Got my clutch, flywheel, and adapter plate all bolted up to find out that my flexplate hit my starter ever so slightly.
So i had to space my starter back a bit.
Once i took everything off and put it back on, it was perfect!!!

So, now i have my own engine hoist i dropped the engine into the bay to see what would clear and what wouldn't

That's it for now. I have been sick since friday, yesterday was really the only day i have felt good since.

Well.. A little more updates.

Got some engine mounts in the mail from brett collins.
Fits pretty good.

Got the engine and transmission into the car... Awwwwww yissss

The guy who i bought the engine and trans from already started to move the shifter forward, and it seems like it will be pretty damn good and close.

So all and all, last night was a good night.

Small update.

Got the engine all bolted in.

My awesome fab skills lol
Transmission mount made from the stock one and some spare metal i had.

Well. I thought with my rack moved forward more than 30mm i thought i might be able to get my steering shaft around the header. Doesn't seem like it.

Collector sits right by where i need to have my shaft come out.

So now I have dilemma, I have a friend that can make me some awesome headers for ~200 bucks. Or me, with 0 fab sillz, hack together something. Only problem is that I will miss vegas round 1 if i have him make them....
I also think with his fab skills he could make headers that benifit me in power vs hinder it haha.

Some of his faboulus fab work.... lol

Hi, i forgot about this.
Ive done major work. It's still not driving though :/

I ended up just making my own headers.
Don't mind the shitty welding.

Built a electrical panel.
Basically for the wiring i left the factory body harness (for now) and ran new power for the ecu, engine, fan, and fuel pump.

from left to right switches.
1 ecu
2 fuel pump
3 fans
4 (haven't decided probably going to be a radiator sprayer.)

The red wire goes to my new fuse panel. (yes there is a fuse in it)

The wiring of this engine was so damn easy.

1 constant to a plug in the engine bay.
1 switched to a plug in the engine bay.
1 switched to a plug near the ecu.
and 1 "start" to a plug in the engine bay.

THAT'S IT.
I had some problem with not getting spark for a bit. All it was, was a ground on the back of the engine not hooked up....

https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v...90234372044250
Got it running, runs great!!!

Cheap radiator FTW

My friend Ellis made me this drive shaft.
Btw if you are thinking of using a z33 trans or g35 trans you will need to get a new yoke, you can NOT use the stock yoke from the z33, you can from the g35 though.

That is the part you will need.

Brett Collins sells them
350Z 370Z Transmission Slip Yoke 3503-323, C3-3-989

Got my belts situated after some mods. I took off the pulley and pump off of the fan pump. (Yes the SC400 had a hydraulic fan.)

Got the radiator and hoses installed. I had to make one of the hoses with a metal pipe, I also drilled a hole and welded a bung in there so I can install a temp probe.

Also installed a power steering cooler.
I used a Ka24e power steering line. With some manipulation with a hammer.

Just straightened out the curved end. No kinks! (that i know of )
Single cam reservoir, I will make my own later.

Hello.

Got lots of stuff done.

Got my custom shifter assembly all finished.

Made the BEST Shifter ever.
Made out of 10 dollar hammer at harbor freight.

Pass seat mounted.

Then this...

Went and drove it. It's stupid loud... My neighbors don't like it haha.
Came back noticed when i pushed the clutch in, it made a noise ( a new one i have never heard)

Pulled it back into the garage looked in the clutch fork hole. I could see the clutch wobbling....

So, i pulled the engine and trans out,

Pulled it all apart. turns out my 1200 dollar clutch has a warped flywheel... (or forward most friction plate) So ya, that's cool.

So here it sits, 1 week before an event that i was supposed to drive and give passengers rides at....
I wonder if quartermaster can get me a new flywheel.

This is what the clutch was doing...
Turned out to be the spacer and not the 1200 dollar clutch.
