Overdrive is like 3rd gear, if you have it off, you would only shift until 3rd gear, when it is on, it'll shift to 4th. Like if you're going on the highway at say 70mph at 4th gear and you wanna overtake someone, instead of flooring it, press overdrive off and it'll shift to 3rd gear, giving you more pull.
When you drag race with an auto, it's best to leave the tranny on D, and don't do a neutral drop. Press the brake and rev the engine to like 2500-3000rpm or until the brakes hold and the tires don't squeal, look for the sweet spot. Leave the engine revving at this rpm and when ready, just let go of the brakes and floor it. Leave overdrive on, cause when you race at WOT, the tranny won't shift until like ~6500rpm at all gears. |

You don't have to use the e-brake. The brake pedal works fine for powerbraking and is easier to disengage. Leaving it out of OD won't make you accelerate any quicker. Sometimes I shift through the gears on my auto 240SX. If you start out in "1", you can hold first gear up to redline instead of experiencing premature shiftaculation at 6000 rpm's (how embarrasing).

Personally I shift at 5, because my car's engine isn't modded and the powerband on a stock 240 is from like 3.5 to 5, maybe 5 and a quarter...

But you don't have to do that, just floor it and it won't shift until ~6500rpm, it's best not to redline, you'd actually lose power that way, especially when you're stock. And you don't have to shift through all the gears. Just leave it at WOT (wide open throttle). If you constantly shift at redline, you'd kill your tranny, as well as your engine.
If you want better/harder shifting, get a tourque converter ($500 from levelten.com) |

My car shifts at 6000 rpms with the pedal on the floor. It will accelerate faster if taken to 6500 rpms in first gear because it will grab second gear at a higher rpm than if it shifted at 6000.

If you need a RAZO shift knob that is cool and has an overdrive button, please visit my site at www.geocities.com/hongkongcarstuff/index.html
$5 off the RA91 and RA92 AT knobs with O/D if you mention to me you drive a 240SX. |
